Broadchurch: Jodie Whittaker says David Tennant lifted cast spirits during filming

Filming any drama must be pretty gruelling for the actors involved, but when it comes to those filming the gritty and hard-hitting murder mystery Broadchurch, we can only imagine how emotionally draining it must have been.

When the first series of Broadchurch hit our screens last spring, it had the nation gripped as we found ourselves mesmerised by the murder investigation that was launched after an 11-year-old boy was found dead on the beach of the sleepy seaside town where he lived.

As the weeks progressed, the drama just intensified as every single member of his family, and several inhabitants of the town, came under the spotlight at DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) tried to catch Danny’s killer.

But it wasn’t just us, the audience, who were moved by the story; the cast were too, and one of the show’s main stars has revealed that she still finds herself moved to tears just thinking about it.

Jodie Whittaker, who played Danny’s mother Beth in the hit drama, has been explaining in a recent interview with Radio Times that she, and many of the other cast, would often become upset while trying to portray such heartache.

However, the actress, who will join many of the original cast when the drama returns for its second series next month, revealed that there was one cast member who was able to lift everyone’s spirits throughout, and that leading man David Tennant.

She said: “David’s just extraordinary leading it, but he was a much stronger character than all of us – the rest of us were always like, ‘oh god, we’re crying’.

“He was the grown up of the storyline. The rest of us were just emotional wrecks.”

On the upcoming second series, Whittaker revealed that she has yet to see the first episode herself, explaining:

“We’re not allowed to see it so I’m quite intrigued. It’s not to do with secrecy – it’s just to do with timing. We only shot it in October so I’m sure some of the episodes are still being edited.”

Broadchurch is due to return to ITV for its second series in the New Year. Watch one of the official teaser trailers for the new series in the clip below:
