Yes and no. No, because the people of the Amazon look like that, and there's no shame in that.

Yes, because they don't dress like that! That's way too much clothes, in weird styles. Amazonian women typically wear skirts and that's it. Or, if they're close enough to trade with more modernized peoples, they wear a mix of traditional clothes and new styles, like a tshirt with a wrap skirt. But not animal skins, like they're shown wearing here.

But that's not really racism, that's just not doing the fucking research and probably executive meddling wanting them to look "exotic"

I don't think it is. I also think if they appeared wearing modern casual clothes someone would also claim it is racist because it shows they have an inferiority complex towards the Western way of life and want to look like the individuals of the predominant culture in the media, the film thus being clearly assimilationist.

Anyway, sometimes racism is extremely clear and sometimes it's in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think it would be appropriate to have them practically naked on screen, just because it's accurate.

But they were not a part of an Amazon tribe. They were part of a Pantanal tribe, then moved into the Amazon.
They're not wearing animal skin (or even imitation) in the pictures, it's brown fabric.

I highly doubt the Pantanal tribe dressed like these women any more than an Amazon tribe. Their outfits seem to be exotica chic- not authentic to any culture or meant to make any sense. Just to look pretty and non-Western. Personally, I think they look laughable. Like something out of a '50s B-movie. I can picture it now: "Amazons from Outer Space!" or maybe "The Girls from Amazon Island!" XD

I wouldn't say these outfits are racist so much as hilarious.

Amazon tries wear straw and sometimes feathers.

Pantanal tribes, according to pictures, wear cloth/fabric and paint.

Seeing as they are vampires in Twilight, and likely to be exceptional at everything, it's not such a long shot that they'd be really good at sewing and making clothes. Probably much better than the normal humans without any industrial resources.

I think we can all agree that it's not racist.

^Thanks, November! XD

@cassie, If you really want to take this seriously....

The Amazon coven is described as having no contact with humans other than to hunt them. So how would they have access to cloth? They could steal it I suppose but if they did it would look much more Western because most Amazon tribes these days wear Western clothing. Any non-Western clothing probably wouldn't be made of cloth. Also I really don't think it's a matter of them patterning their clothes after a certain culture but rather making clothes from the resources available to them. I believe in the books they are described as wild-looking and clothed entirely in animals skins. Which makes sense. Obviously the movie depictions have taken some liberties with them in order to prettify them. Which isn't that big of a deal, happens all the time in Hollywood.

These are just some random examples of traditional clothing. There are of course many different tribes within these 2 regions that would no doubt differentiate from each other.
And then this is what these tribes are more likely to be wearing now in their everyday life:

I really don't think the way Hollywood has chosen to depict these characters is surprising.

They can make cloth. The same way anyone else would.

^By growing and harvesting cotton? I suppose it's possible, I just can't picture it. Why would they bother when they can just use animal skins? There's only the three of them. Anyway, I think it's obvious that the movie depiction is all about aesthetics rather than authenticity.

I think they look like they've just stepped off a Parisian runway, not the Amazon rain forest. It's not racist.
