David Tennant is one of our finest actors. That’s a given. He’s been a serial shagger, a time travelling alien with two hearts and a traumatised detective in a crumbling seaside town.
As Tennant’s new comedy What We Did On Our Holiday hits cinemas, we’ve taken a look back at eight of his best moments on the small and silver screen.
Tennant’s first collaboration with Russell T Davies saw him in impish form as the famed Italian lothario. Given that this was shown on BBC3, its cast – including Rose Byrne, Peter O’Toole and Rupert Penry-Jones, was incredible.
‘Allons-y!’ Christopher Eccleston might have beaten Tennant to the role when the BBC revived the series, but only Tom Baker’s Time Lord has the same popular appeal as Tennant’s Doctor.
His chemistry with Billie Piper made a romance angle palatable while his genuine fanboy status meant exhibitions of joy or alien anger were electrifying. We’ll always miss him.
3. Barty Crouch Jr – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
He’ll be welcomed back to Azkaban as a hero, apparently. A brief but crucial role in the Potter series as Tennant played an undercover Death Eater set on delivering Harry to He Who Must Not Be Named.

A gruelling, sensitive portrayal for this BBC Scotland production about a photographer trying to bring up his three daughters in the wake of the death of their mother.
This remake of the 1985 suburban horror might not have been wholly necessary – or memorable – but Tennant has great fun as a Vegas illusionist who’s
The Scot is exceptional as the Welsh assistant manager who, with Matt Busby hospitalised after the Munich air disaster, cobbled together a makeshift team and steered Manchester United to the 1958 FA Cup final.

7. Charles Darwin – The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (2012)
He joined a sterling ensemble voice cast for Aardman’s swashbuckling high seas adventure, bringing a flustered gentility to the part.
Check out behind-the-scenes footage of Tennant’s voice work; being off camera doesn’t stop him from giving the role his all.
‘Cop haunted by his past’ isn’t exactly a groundbreaking role, but Tennant’s class shone through in ITV’s superb child murder series. Of course, acting opposite the great Olivia Colman would make any actor raise their game.
