Someone who is exceptionally rich/beautiful/intelligent can also be characterized as "different", but they wouldn't be rejected by society. That only happens in cases where different is considered negative (though what is negative and what is not is generally very subjective, which can lead to unfair prejudice.)

Being exceptionally talented is different, and I don't think society condemns exceptional people.
A person with antisocial personality disorder with tendencies towards serial murder is different/unusual and condemned by society (for good reason).
However, a person with an IQ of 190 is different/unusual and applauded by society.
Average is simply that. Average.
