Add a pick that says "I don't mind it for chat" and I'll select it. Chatspeak is great for chat, but it's terrible anyplace else. For most of Fanpop, it's just awful. Most of the site involves writing comments which are essentially a permanent record of your thoughts (so people will be reading it again and again in perpetuity) with no reason to have to type fast (so there's no advantage to using it), so chatspeak is completely out of place.

on fanpop i would only use 'lol' or sometimes 'omg' but i do sometimes just say 'oh my god' / 'oh my gosh'

the reason for the 'loling' is because you wouldn't really say
laugh out loud in the middle of a sentance
or even if you did it with the stars (*laugh out loud*)
it would still look weird

although the word is used normaly if you have nothing else to say sometimes :p but i dont use it like that lol
ohh see, i was laughing to myself then so i put 'lol' :p ♥

since i only have a limited vocabulary to choose from i tend to use emotes to emphasize something/explain when im joking etc

i really hate them though so i forget to add them (assuming people know when im being serious and when kidding)which can be a bad idea.

"LOL" is fine to show a reaction (your comment/picture/video made me laugh) but its clearly overused. it shouldnt be used to say something mean and then "dilute" the orginal meaning by just adding a "LOL"

The only one I've used is "LOL." I don't think it's bad at all, especially if you are trying to convey the message that you were joking, or being sarcastic. Otherwise your words could be misinterpreted.

There's a time and a place for it. I don't mind it in some cases, but I mind it in others. People ought to be able to express themselves properly when the situation calls for it.

I don't mind the occasional shortcut but there's a limit to what I can stand. When whole sentences consist only of chatspeak I tend to lose my patience.

I only use lol and that actually means 'fun' in Dutch, so I always have two meanings in my head when I type it.

And I agree with love_not_war: chat speak is especially confusing when English isn't you first language.

With me there is a limit to how many you can put into a sentance before it's just too much. Lol, brb, g2g, kk and a few others are okay but when you start using numbers so you don't have to spell, you know you have a problem.

I've been thinking about this more, and I realize that chat-speak used in any context other than chat seems either juvenile, insulting, or both. I've been on Facebook a lot lately, and it took me a while to figure out why I was having such a negative response to some people on the site. I realized that it was because of the chat speak, which reads like someone doesn't respect his readers enough to write to them like an adult.

I think lol is acceptable but i hate things like this:

omg I ws lyke tlkn 2 dis awsum dood ysterdae.lololololol

a simple lol at the end of the sentence is great for saying you were joking or find something funny.

pretty much if there isn't a million lol's or emotes it's grand.

I truly can't stand it. I use "lol" quite a bit though, it's just part of my vocabulary when I'm typing, and depending on my mood I'll sometimes use emotes. "but wen sum1 types lyk dis all da tym," it really decreases my opinion of them. I know we're not in an English class, but we're not 8 years old either. (Well... most of us). The only reason to type with text is if you're in a hurry, but that's not the case with Fanpop.

Anywho... guess that raps up my rant.

I often use LOL, OMG and emotes, and BRB in chat. But when people type whole answers and comments in text speak it can be confusing and annoying.

mycrownofjewels picked No, but I don't mind LOL and Emotes.:
"LOL" and "BRB" seem appropriate when used in moderation, but dumbing down the sentence because you can't type a simple word seems stupid. It makes language in general less valued, I suppose. More than just "txt language," though, or in addition to it, the misuse of grammar is perhaps more annoying. However you choose to type (small caps, caps, etc.), just be consistent. Think before you submit a comment as to whether or not you actually have something to say or contribute to the discussion, too. When fans comment on a pick just to say what they already picked (and not a reason for it), it seems repetitive and unnecessary. Sorry, I got a bit off-topic there...

I try to speak properly, but I must admit, writing "lol" is easier than expressing my feelings with a long paragraph, especially in a comment which is meant to be short (not in debates or articles, usually).
