Ratings. They sound good in theory. What better way to know how good content is? Unfortunately, the reality is far, far different:

Trolls - We've all seen them. They rate things a one, just because they can.

Non-Raters - There is a LOT of awesome content on Fanpop that goes unrated.

Friends and Enemies - vrienden get high ratings. Enemies get low ratings. It happens.

Rating Unfairly - People dish out 1-star ratings to afbeeldingen and videos containing characters/pairings they don't support.

Rating the Uploading Process - Content gets rated based on HOW it was uploaded instead of the quality of the actual...

This section of my guide for Fanpop users details the ratings system and was last edited on 26 May 2008.

As with any web site, Fanpop is only as good as its content. Some content - what I think of as the soul of the site - is generated door users in the fora and in commentaren on the rest of the content and cannot be rated. But the rest of the content - the body of the site - has a ratings system. The whole principle of the ratings system is a democratic one: if enough people vote, the really qualified items rise to the top. That's why everything that can be rated can be sorted in a lijst from highest...

 Tip No. 2 in action!
Tip No. 2 in action!
Have u ever wanted to act like a total jerk on Fanpop? Piss people off, lose your fans, drive everyone crazy, and maybe even get banned, u just weren’t sure how? Here’s a handy guide on how to do exactly that!

1. Disrespect other people’s opinions. Yeah, u think that band XYZ sucks and u wouldn’t touch one of their CD’s with a ten-foot pole, and you’re going to assume that everyone on the planet shares your sentiment. Who cares if some people might not appreciate u going on about how the lead singer looks like a bald gorilla and sings like a cat throwing up? They should...

So we, as users, take a lot from Fanpop every day. We watch videos, we take quiz's, share awesome links, etc. We all have gained something from Fanpop, whether it be a funny video, of a cool new website. So I was thinking that perhaps maybe once a month, if even that, a mass majority (as many users we can get) would all add one thing. Whether it be a video, a quiz, a soapbox, of even just a link, we would all be giving back. I was thinking that it could be the first of every month. Maybe even a time could be assigned to that date, which would allow other users to get to know each other and thread the community together. Perhaps at Four PM EST, we would all add something to Fanpop. I know many of u add items everyday but this would let less-contributing users thoughts be heard. These users could become hooked on Fanpop and then that's +1 meer dedicated fan. I don't know if this would take off, but if it does, it could be great. Please just leave a comment.

Just a few of the hundreds
Just a few of the hundreds
After creating my link spot and noting the severe lack of members, curiosity got me to searching for spots on Fanpop that only had a single member (generally, their creator).

I came across spots that were months old and still only had a single member such as Chel's link spot, harold's link spot, of berly's link spot. And I thought to myself, these spots were created to meet other fans and yet there appeared to be no other fans of these topics on all of fanpop? Ridiculous! Or... maybe it's true.

Some of the one-fan spots seemed very obscure (to me, at least), so it's quite possible that there...
