Well, greeks didn't know so....
In the epic poems we hear frequently that Zeus is referred to as 'Father'; meaning which he is greatest of the Gods and the supreme omnipotent, the most potent male, as he gives birth(something completely reserved for women).
Mid nineteenth century research on Hera suggested that she was a Goddess of matriarchy worshipped by a matriarchal society before Hellenes. Her very marriage to Zeus, the then most powerful God worshipped afterwards, and a subsequent subordination, alluding therefore to the supremacy of Zeus seems to be a way of showing that even 'the most powerful matriarch' falls weak before 'the most powerful Father of all, Zeus'. We know from religious texts that they are subject to change and that new Gods were introduced and corresponding stories were forged, Dionysus being a good example.
This also implies the rising of a patriarchal society, and giving women less respect than they originally had(most people glorified by Greek texts are male only few are females). The terms referring to women afterwards showed lesser and lesser respect pertaining to their social importance like calling the maternal side as 'distaff side', implying a woman's job is 'spinning'.This could just be a way of preserving Hera, upholding her importance over all but not Zeus.
What I said is merely a conjecture based on few things I read. Please comment further if you think that anything is wrong or if my thinking process has totally blundered.
But yeah, it is nasty, and it does explain why he fooled around with all the other women. lol
I need to go back to 4th grade now...
