The BBC version may have stuck closer to the novel, but the new one better captures the spirit of the text.

A miniseries will pretty much always beat a feature-length film for accuracy in adaptation...

Although the new Pride and Prejudice WAS enjoyable, The last part I didnt like. Darcy and Elizabeth meet eachother unexpectedly in a field. psh. Like they knew exactly what time to take a walk and "bump" into eachother. Then, he says if your feelings are the same as they were tell me. All she does is kiss his hands and say "your hands are cold" Elizabeth NEVER did that!!!!!! She professed her feelings the opposite of what they were and they talked about how sorry they were for their actions etc. GRRR. sorry, i read the book and the ending to the newer version was quite a disappointment. As well as the annoying procession of "Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy" okay, we get it that Mr Darcy is incandescently happy. STOP BEING ANNOYING AND CHEESY!!!! *sigh* okay, im done now. lol. The old one follows the book really well and since i loved the book, i liked the old better.

the bbc version may have been closer to the novel, but the film was way more entertaining and really made it a little bit more modern and easy to watch. this mr. darcy was waaayyyy better than colin firth.

LaMonica picked Pride and Prejudice 1995 BBC:
The BBC version is best because it completely follows everything about the book. I think the movie version had the actors more accurate in age , and they were great. But when it comes to sticking to the book from every aspect. The BBC version wins hands down. I can't believe that the triumph of the book..The DOUBLE WEDDING was taken from us in the movie. Although nothing will ever ruin the story..I think it was completely WRONG to leave that out of the last version.

kateliness2 picked Pride and Prejudice 2005:
Meh. I am always the little voice for this, but the acting, cinematography, and directing were simply fabulous in the movie.

And, also to disagree with the majority, I loved Keira as Lizzy. Jennifer was so... stiff. She just blended in with all the perfectly behaved, restrained girls, etc. She was fine, but Lizzy is supposed to be slightly rebellious, and a free spirit. I think Keira really captured that.

And, I think it's extremely difficult to compare the two versions. I'd watch the miniseries if I wanted a complete play-by-play of the book- and I do love it!
But the movie took some creative risks! You don't need a total retell of a story to make a great movie based on it.

The acting and chemistry were undeniably good, in my opinion. I guess most of the rest of you can disagree with the Academy Awards, but I think the nominations were very well deserved, and so did all the world's critics.

Jennifer Ehle DEFINED Elizabeth and made her believable...Kiera made a decent attempt at the role but is just not in the same league.

The same goes for Darcy...Macfayden is "tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me" when I have already experienced the classic talents of Mr. Colin Firth!

I will say that the cinematography for the movie was beautiful but it's hard to compete with the superior mini-series...

Okay, I'm not going to rant here, but I LIKE THEM BOTH EQUALLY.
I get annoyed by people who think the 1995 one is the gospel, and hate the new one just because it's different. Both are equally close the book--they're just different interpretations.

Im not going to repeat what others have said, only this: the 1995 version gave us more time to get to know all the characters, kept to the book very faithfully (meerly adding a few bits here and there to add drama, which we can fully understand!)also i way prefer the actors in how they played their characters, every character i feel was far superiour in the bbc version than in the movie, alos there was colin firth! and the lake scene!!!!! I love the bbc version and do not like the movie. it is trying to make it modern and easier for people who do not like this type of films and books to watch, i think thats silly, why make it modern???? Sure the people wj=ho care about it will be the ones to watch and buy it, the others will meerly watch it once and then forget about it! to many things were added that would not have happened, it was to far fetched for my liking.
BBC version IS gospel!!!!

Like so many i love the bbc 95 version best, however I did feel that the film captured a believable sense of homely disorder. The music for both productions is beautiful and evocative and i have thoroughly enjoyed learning some of it on my own piano.

I like the adaption of the older one better (the new one was too short)
But I liked the new cast better
So
I like them to re-make the 1995 version with the 2005 cast
THAT would be perfect :)

I agree with Kateliness. I thought that Jennifer made a horrid Elizabeth Bennet. And while Colin Firth was amazing, Matthew Macfayden absolutely blew me away. He was perfect for the part and completely mesmerizing. He truly became Mr. Darcy and perfectly expressed his prejudice, shyness, and inner turmoil.

BBC version, definitely! The newer one was a nice enough movie, but it wasn't the book at all, in accuracy OR in spirit. Whereas the BBC one? That WAS Pride & Prejudice. I couldn't have asked for a better adaptation! :)

Keria Knightley brought Elizabeth Bennet to life were as Jennifer Ehle was stiff, akward, clam, normal, dull, blank, ect. Keria Knighley brought somthing more to Elizabeth Bennet. I'am reading the book right now and Elizabeth Bennet was charming, rebelius, fun everything Jennifer Ehle was not and much more!

AS USUAL I agree with kateliness. Part of the reason is my love for well made movies. The director is a genius. It looks beautiful, it sounds beautiful, its what a good period movie is meant to be.

But also I ADORE Keira Knightly as Lizzy. I think what I love most about Jane Austen is how well she understands how absurd people are sometimes. She GETS people. I always appreciate mocking. Especially mocking as subtle as hers. When I worked this out I thought "Holy cow! She's a genius!". And Keira Knightly portrayed Elizabeth's amusement at everyone - her ridiculous sisters, her ridiculous cousin - absolutely perfectly. She really earnt my respect in this movie.
