Rochester actually explains why he pretends to be marrying Blanche Ingram - to wind Jane up and to make her fall "as madly in love with me as I was with you" as he says in Chapter 24 of the book.
Sorry about the quotation answer, but I'm studying Jane Eyre at the moment, so it's sort of seconde nature to me!

Yes, great answer, Read the book. It will explain it all. It may seem a daunting task but is so very good.

Rochester loves Jane. He doesn't care at all about Miss Ingram. Mr. Rochester appears to court her in order to make Jane jealous. In the meantime, he's trying to find out if Jane really loves him (the gypsy woman). But I think he's also afraid of what will happen then : he doesn't forget he's married and that Jane would never accept this relationship if she knew... I think he's trying to resist his love for Jane (because of his past), but when she proclaims her love for him, he proposes to her (with a "god forgive me")...

yes i agree! maybe he did that to risist his love for jane! and try to do something that makes sense to him and people, u know falling in love with a governess and marring her!! people will reject this idea and would only think that jane fooled the old man for money

according to Mr.Rochester he did that to make her jealous, and to make her as much in love with him as he was to her... but sometimes i feel that he was lying! i feel like he wanted to marry her for her postion maybe... of for her money of her beauty... any way i believe he only married her to get some thing useful but not for love

Mr Rochester's character is a man of many hidden depths, he comes across as a man who is serious, unperdictable, aloof and far from passionate, and being a man of the world he is fully aware of Jane's attraction towards him and enjoys playing little mind games with her. His flirtations with Blanche Ingram is his way of seeing how Jane would react and as the story progresses we realise that mr Rochester is equally in love with Jane.
