Chapter 1
"Carlisle, get out and bring the cattle in before they get hurt." My father said, barely looking up at me from the sermon he was working on.
"Yes father." I zei as I went and pulled on the warmest clothes I could find.
"You must pay close attention, meer animals have been killed. I fear that there is evil walking amongst us, we all need to pray for help and guidance." He said, making the sign of the kruis against his chest. I nodded and did the same, asking that the Lord keep us all veilig in these trying times.
I grabbed a lantern and walked out the back, making sure that the door closed securely behind me. My fathers words rang through my head, there had been many deaths in town in the last few months..and recently there were animals killed too. I knew that father believed it was witches...or worse..something that had crawled directly out of the pits of hell. I was so lost in my thoughts that when one of the cattle broke a stick I nearly jumped out of my skin in fear. I laughed quietly as I calmed myself and continued out into the pasture, getting the animals in the schuur quickly. I locked the gate, checking it twice to make sure that it was secure before I turned and walked back into the house.
"Were they are all safe?" Father called from the other room.
"Yes." I called as I went into the keuken-, keuken and began cleaning up the dishes from dinner.
I was in the keuken-, keuken and had just finished cleaning when there was a knock on the door. I made it to the door before my father, pulling it open to find Charles, the towns mayor outside the door. He smiled at me as he held out the lantern that he held in his hand.
"Carlisle, I need to speak with your father please. It's rather urgent, Josephina has been injured." He said, his face going pale as he walked through the door.
I offered him a glass of wine as I went to get father, but he declined it. I watched him closely as he went over to the chair and sat down, ringing his hands in worry. I knew that this had to be important for him to come at this hour.
"Father, Charles is here. It seems Josephina was attacked door something. He wishes to speak with you." I zei as I walked into my fathers room.
"Lord bless her soul." He whispered as he closed his eyes and prayed. "I feared that they would get closer into town and hurt one of us."
Before I could ask who of what he was talking about my father stood up and stormed past me into the main part of the house. I followed closely because I wanted to know what was happening, but my father turned and looked at me as he shook his head.
"No Carlilse, I believe that u could help with Josephina meer then u could help on this hunt. Please go to her, please help her if possible of help her family in this time of need."
I knew that arguing would do me no good, so I did as I was asked. I gathered my stuff and ran out the door knowing that they wouldn't talk until I was gone. Father had zei he wanted me to being going on raids with him but he chose to send me to help the girl who was attacked. I kept an eye out as I ran, hoping that whatever was hurting our town would not choose me for its volgende victim.
