Margot Robbie to Play Queen Elizabeth in 'Mary Queen of Scots' 

Margot Robbie is in negotiations to play Queen Elizabeth in Focus Features and Working Title’s “Mary Queen of Scots,” opposite Saoirse Ronan.

Josie Rourke is directing the film with Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin producing.

The drama is based on the true story of Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, only to find herself condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.

“Mary” has yet to be greenlit, but sources say things are headed in the right direction. If greenlit, the film would likely go sometime later this year.

Following the success of big hits like “Suicide Squad” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” this latest role gives the Australian-born Robbie a prestige part to add to her portfolio. It could also have awards season potential given Focus’ track record of pushing Oscar campaigns for its releases.

Robbie, 26, is currently starring in Fox Searchlight’s “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” where she plays the wife of “Winnie the Pooh” author A.A. Milne. She recently wrapped production on “I, Tonya” starring as the title character Tonya Harding in a film she also produced under her Lucky Chap Entertainment banner.

She is repped by Management 360, CAA, Aran Michael Management and attorney Jeff Bernstein.

The only problem I have is Saoirse (an Irish woman) is playing Mary (a Scottish woman), and yes I understand that Mary is not really Scottish in terms of growing up, But I feel insulted that they didn’t try to find a good Scottish actress and there are many (popular and new). Don’t think this movie will be great in my country.

I don’t think this show will be successful..because recently we have story about.mary queen of scots here in the U.S we still watching The Four Season and at the same time they are watching it in Brazil Mary Queen of Scots is Clay by in Australian girl name Adelaide kane and she is the best for the part of queen Elizabeth I Rachel skarsten from canada you might want to see it REIGN TV SERIES CW

Not a big fan of casting her as Elizabeth. She wasn’t some great beauty and had a completely different face shape. They’re trying to get butts in the seat rather than be accurate. Hopefully makeup will help.

Only a few of the films with Mary get her accent correct. She lived in France from ages 5 to 18. Yet I have seen her portrayed on screen again and again with either a heavy Scottish accent, or more often, a crisp, English RP accent. At least once with a thick French one. I feel like it would be a hodge-podge, but more French than anything (like Eva Green.)

If Saoirse Ronan is going to play her role, I’m sure she’ll do well. She’s quite good at accents.

Yes, Ronan will be great, and she’s been attached to play Mary since 2012/13.

Em, the film has been ”greenlit.” Filming starts this summer!
