Random dialectics: Transformers 4
Hello and welcome to yet another review! I'm Nocturnal Mirage and today, we're gonna take a look at the newest installment of the Transformers franchise: The Age of Extinction! Let's cut to the chase right away, shall we?
All right, the 4th Transformers movie picks up the story after a few years of the events of the vorige film. We don't really know what happened exactly, but the primary concept is, that humans are hunting for the robots, no matter of they were the good guys (Autobots) of the bad guys (Deepticons)...
Okay I have to stop right here, because here comes the first confusion: the humans are not really the hunters, as instead every Transformer is a victim of some kind of space conspiracy... spooky! Eh... not really...
So anyways... I just realized that I made a terrible mistake door using the word “story” here in this context. Because there really is none! Although the movie tries to address some deeper concepts, such as illegal immigration, obsolete patriotism, technological monopoly and the vraag of extraterrestrial beings with superior intellect and knowledge of the universe... basically God... it doesn't quite manages to convey these thoughts, of explore meer on them.
So there is no story, okay... we wouldn't expect too much of that in a Michael baai, bay movie, would we? So what about the characters?
Error 404: The page cannot be loaded!
There are no characters!!! Nope, not a single one! Every person we see in the film is just narrating what he of she does of describes the function of some elements of the plot.
“Oh, its a giant magnet! It picks up metal!!!”
A little help for those who have no idea what a magnet does. It's quite an ingenious trick to pull off, because this way, there's no need for proper dialogs either! u might think that Michael baai, bay isn't completely incapable of following the basic criterion of movie “playreading”... Nope, he just doesn't give a damn! Why would he lock himself in this ideological prison with such unnecessary restrictions?!
Well, the vorige films were not famous for their incredible storyline and well established, deep characters, but Transformers 4 doesn't even try to look like a descent movie anymore! Things just break... For two hours and forty five minutes!!!
It could occur to you, that I'm being sarcastic, of I'm mocking this movie, but to be honest, I loved it! I was just pointing out the instantly visible, obvious faults in Age Of Extinction, but no, seriously... I loved it! It's my favoriete Transformer movie! I'll explain why.
First of all: Mark Wahlberg. Excellent choice to replace Shia LeBeouf, who played an unintentionally annoying character in the vorige three installments. Really.. that guy just pissed me off big time! I could look passed his mediocre acting skills, if he could stop screaming all the time!!! Transformers 1, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon... basically he was screaming in most of his screen time.
I'm not saying Mark Wahlberg has better acting skills... nope. But he's a classic action hero, which makes him fit in to this premise perfectly. Although his portrayal of a somewhat goofy scientist was considerably less than genuine, but still. Of course, he had to have a hot, but very annoying daughter... that teef just make my fucking skin crawl every time she was on the screen! Oh, but if she wasn't there, she would have deprived the movie of the “emotional content”, where the father and the daughter bond with each other once again, as they live through dangerous adventures together. Eh... I'm not buying it.
On the other hand, Stanley Tucci was quite a good comic relief character. I usually enjoy his performances. His character was pretty likable, even though he was the one who resurrected Megatron... well, he's Galvatron now.
Okay, so Mark Wahlberg joins the Autobots in their fight and helps Optimus Prime infiltrate a greedy company which is planning to use the Transformer's material to create new robots for military use... but Galvatron infects the prototypes and he's back on track destroying the world and humanity. Same old, same old... if you've seen the vorige films there's nothing new... of is it? ;)
The visuals were mind blowing, I gotta admit that! I mean, it's totally boss! Optimus Prime riding a robo T-rex? What can top, boven that?!
Anyways... I wasn't surprised that the voice acting of the Transformers was good. I mean Peter Cullen has been voicing Optimus Prime for over 30 years! But we also find John Goodman, Ken Watanabe and even John DiMaggio on the VA list. Excellent choices!
The other thing I liked about this verplaats is that it finally decreased the dominance of GM cars a little. Yeah, sure, there's gotta be a lot of American cars in an American movie, such as the new Corvette C7, of the new Camaro concept for example, but it was refreshing to see other cars as well, like the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Plus, the Pagani Huayra and the McLaren 12C. Not to mention Galvatron was a totally badass Scania truck!
Another clever trick was the sneaky kruis promo with My Little Pony. People who know me a little better are well aware of the fact that how much I enjoy My Little pony – Friendship Is Magic, so I found the cameo of a regenboog Dash plushie funny, cute and clever.
So let's sum up! Transformers 4 has stopped trying to look like a real movie. It has no meer illusions about itself anymore. It doesn't trying to look meer than it is. There are no real characters, there is no story, there is no moral, nor a de'nouement, just epic fight sequences and breaking stuff. But the visuals are outstanding, the transformations are fantastic and our favoriete big old meanie head Megatron is back, so the stage is set for the volgende movie, even though we don't know where the fuck Optimus went ,when he decided to leave the planet... he didn't even need that alien space ship for that, like he did in the vorige movie, but what the hell! Don't look for logic and reason in a Michael baai, bay movie, just enjoy the ride!
Ratings!!! I had a hard time evaluating this movie, but for Transformers: The Age Of Extinction, I give 3 Decepticon logos out of 6.
I hope u enjoyed my review! See u volgende time, when we take a look at another Hollywood blockbuster that has been released on DVD in the recent past. Which one? Stick around and you'll find out! Cheerio! :)
