Probably got fanged door vampires. Takeout forgets to put onions on your hamburger? The regular ui delivery guy disappeared – again, probably due to vampires. And so on. For a college town, Morganville had a remarkable lot of vampires.


Claire was an authority on all those subjects: Texas Prairie University, and of course, the vampires. And mysterious disappearances. She’d almost been one...

“Oh, this doesn’t sound like a good idea,” Claire said, looking down at the paper that had been shoved into her hand door a passing student. She paused in the shade of the Science Building porch to read it. Only idiots stood around in full sun at Texas Prairie universiteit in the middle of the afternoon – well, idiots and football players – and angled herself into a corner so she wouldn’t get buffeted door the streams of people pouring out after the end of class. There were a few hardy salmons trying to swim upstream, but she didn’t think they’d make it.

Lunch was always an iffy proposition at the Glass House. Some days all of Claire’s house mates were all in, most days nobody was; some days there was food in the fridge. Most days, not. Claire had made a fine art out of scrounging up crackers and cans of soup. Her favoriete was cream of tomato. Yum.

She was slurping up her soup, alone as usual, when she heard a thump from upstairs. Odd. She knew for a fact that Eve was at her job on campus, and Michael was off teaching gitaar lessons. Shane – well, she never knew for sure...

Thinking about Claire. Again. Can’t believe I’m writing this.
Glad nobody’s ever going to read this. Don’t think I could stand that, but I can’t talk about it, either -- not even with Michael. I mean, he’s cool, but ... yeah. Not guy talk.

Jason didn't say much at dinner. In fact, he was almost completely silent, though he ate four tacos like he'd been starving for a month, and when Eve brought out ice cream for dessert he ate a double helping of that too.

Shane was right. The brisket was delicious in the tacos.

The way the Glass House worked, on a practical level, was that there was a schedule for the stuff that had to be done. Cooking, cleaning, fixing things, laundry. Technically, they were all on every housemate's list. In practice, though, what happened was this: the boys (Michael and Shane) bribed the girls (Eve and Claire) to do laundry, and the girls bribed the boys to fix things.

Claire glared at her new iPod -- which was actually really nice -- and put it on random shuffle as she looked at the mess she'd made of her latest laundry effort. And there was the problem:...
