Yes, it was a rivalry, but we don't really know who started it. Most people assume that James and Sirius did, but who knows. Maybe Snape did! The 5th year incident, after the DADA written exam, they just started taunting him, he didn't do anything. Sure he fought back, but he hadn't actually done anything to deserve it.
