I honestly think the 'canon' phrase has been silently obliterated as fans come up with their own definitions of the word. I have always seen the 'canon' phrase as a pairing which is in the original material. For example, Ron/Hermione in Harry Potter is canon as the auteur intended them to be together. Whether Harry/Luna of Goyle/Hermione is a non-canon pairing, as there is no relevance of romance in the novels between the two characters. So for me Kirk/Spock in a romantic sense is non-canon. I adore Jack/Ianto as it's IN the show. One thing I've never understood about K/S fans is they say it's canon when there are tons of online petitions out (created door K/S fans) in order to make the pairing canon. If it's already canon to them, why do they need to make petitions for? I can see why fans like Kirk/Spock but I honestly think they overly analyze scenes, for example, Kirk putting is hand on Spock's shoulder. To me, he's comforting him in a friendly way. It doesn't have to mean he's in love with him. Men can be vrienden u know.

I acknowledge that Kirk and Spock had an impenetrable friendship and that their relationship is perhaps the strongest ster Trek has ever had, and Kirk was probably the person Spock respected most and vice-versa, but a romantic relationship? No way. I'm not trying to be callous of anything but I believe that the actors zei that wasn't part of their relationship and unless you're looking for it, the average person wouldn't see that subtext. Both characters were presented as heterosexual and have gegeven no inclination that either of them were interested in men. They had a deep friendship, they were like brothers, not lovers.
