So Thats Why Vision\'s Wearing Those Clothes In Captain America: Civil War

Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Vision was born when Tony Stark’s A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. was downloaded into a synthetic body originally intended for Ultron. One Mind Stone insertion and a blast of Thor’s lightning later, the Avengers had themselves a new powerful android ally. When Captain America: Civil War begins, Vision is still working with the other Avengers to protect the world, but in his down time, he’s trying to fit in more with humanity. This includes wearing dapper-looking clothing, as we’ve seen in previews and clips.

In an interview with Vulture, costume designer Judianna Makovsky recapped how she and directors Joe and Anthony Russo talked about how Vision would make himself feel more comfortable around the other Avengers. After passing on basic comfort clothes, like sweats, they settled for the more dignified look seen above by considering J.A.R.V.I.S.’s frame of mind. Makovsky said:

What would J.A.R.V.I.S. wear? I thought he would be confident and elegant in his taste, almost perfect, so we decided to look into the men of the 1940s, like Cary Grant: very simple flannel trousers, elegant cashmere sweaters. In addition to the above items of clothing, Judianna Makovsky also mentioned that there’s an ascot tucked under his shirt. Considering that Vision is already rocking an old school wardrobe, an ascot fits the ensemble excellently. It’s hard to imagine Vision wearing everyday clothing like jeans, a t-shirt or a hooded sweatshirt, so that Cary Grant look works remarkably well (especially considering that the human Jarvis from Agent Carter wore similar attire). That said, let’s not forget that when Vision is out in the field, he’s without clothes and showing off his usual red, green and yellow colors, complete with cape. Doesn’t that mean he’s battling the forces of evil in the nude? I mean, all power to him, but still.

When we left Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he had just helped Earth’s Mightiest Heroes defeat Ultron and his drone army. Although he became a member of the new Avengers team, he was still a “newborn” and hadn’t spent much time with humanity. Because Vision is an artificial being with a different thought process, he tries his best in Captain America: Civil War to relate to his organic allies and what it means to be human, and dressing the part must help him with that. This also includes growing closer to teammate Scarlet Witch, who also feels like an outsider due to her abilities. However, their relationship gets complicated once the superhero conflict begins, as Vision sides with Team Iron Man and Wanda throws in with Team Captain America.
