The Walking Dead: Carol Finds Strength In Tragedy For \'Sophia\'s Honor\'

The Walking Dead has a slew of intense characters, and Melissa McBride has a pretty solid answer for why Carol is such a badass. 

If there is a constant over the series of The Walking Dead, it’s tragedy.

Throughout the five season on the air, each and every episode has featured some sort of heartbreak with some episodes more tragic than others. This season alone we lost Bob, Tyreese, Beth and Noah including so many more over the course of the series’ run.

While some characters go off the deep end because of the tragedy — looking at you, 

interview with Forbes, Melissa McBride noted that she believes Carol does al that she does — and finds strength in tragedy — because it honors Sophia.

Like in life, adversity is a great teacher, if we find the lessons. She had losses, the loss of her daughter. But there’s still this nurturing elelment in Carol, taking these children under her wing. She’s trying hard—in Sofia’s a honor—to prepare them for this world, so they don’t suffer the same fate as her daughter.

That’s an interesting way to put it — but it makes a lot of sense. Carol is a badass but there’s heartbreak in her awesomeness. This is part of what makes her such an endearing character and part of what makes her someone that fans can identify with.

Carol is important to the show, but as this interview proves, it’s for reasons beyond how well she can survive and teach those around her the same.
