I drove non-stop to Volterra.
The plane dropped me off at an airport in Venice, so I just stal another car- yet again -and started driving. I don't even know how long I've been driving. Hours, days, who cared? I just knew that I was almost there.
Driving this time was a little easier. The choking stopped, and I could breathe. Not easily, but I could feel some air in my lungs.
It took a while, but I was finally here, and decided to pull into a hotel. I didn't bother to look at the name, because I wasn't going in. This was just another place to abandon the car. It was late, which meant it was dark, so I could run all the way to the Volturi kasteel without being seen. I got out of the car and started running. One thing about Italy is that there are many cuts and corners to go around. Thus making me run slower. Another thing that slowed my running were the amount of people just walking around the city. I knew the Father Marcus celebration was tomorrow, but I never thought of how many tourists would be walking the streets at night.
I decided to start thinking, as I ran, about how I would ask Aro, Marcus and Caius to do me this favor. It wasn't like I could walk in and say,"Aro, Marcus, Caius? Could u do me a BIG favor amd kill me?" No. There was no way that would work. Aro would probably want to make small talk before he even asked me why I came. Therefor, I will ask them as soon as I see them. The quicker the better. I'm sure Aro won't approve, so I'll have to think of some other way to get them to do it. Provoke them. I remember the conversation Bella and I had about the Volturi. When I first told her about them.
"You don't provoke the Volturi. Not unless u want to die." I'd said. I sighed.
I could see it now. The kasteel where all of the Volturi reside. It was just as dark and eerie looking as always.
I slowed my pace to a human speed walk and approached the castle. A tall man, almost as tall as Emmett, stood in front of the large wooden door. It was so dark, he wouldn't have been able to notice I was a vampire except for my scent, but this man was human.
"Como posso aiutarla, signore?" He spoke only Italian and asked me how he can help me.
"Sono qui per visualizzare Aro, Marcus, e Caius." I answered. Meaning "I'm here to see Aro, Marcus and Caius." As soon as I zei their names, a dark mantel came walking toward me from behind the large man. Thier petite stature, let me know that it was either Jane of Alec.
"E bene, Gregario." Her soprano voice told me it was no one but Jane.
"Come with me, Edward." she turned toward the castle, motioning me to follow her. I excused myself from the man, Gregario, and followed her.
She lead me through many dark passage ways and into what looked to be a troon room. Aro, Marcus, and Caius sat on the supposed thrones, of course, and Aro's face lit up when he saw me.
"Edward? Edward! My vegetarian friend!" He stood up and began to walk toward me. I saw Jane stiffen.
"Now, now Jane dear. This is Edward! Our beloved friend! Certainly he means us no harm." I remained silent as he chastised her. He pushed her out of the way and hugged me. I didn't hug him back. I stood perfectly still.
"Hello, Aro. It's nice to see u again." As I spoke, the others- Marcus and Caius -got up and walked toward us. Both only holding out their hand for me to shake.
"Marcus, Caius," I nodded as I shook their hands.
"Hello, young one." Marcus said.
"Hello, Edward," Caius zei as well, a little meer acid in his voice. He truly didn't want me to be here.
TRUST ME, I zei in my head. I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE EITHER.
"So Edward, how's your family? I see they aren't here with you. How is Carlisle? Oh my, it's been centuries since I've seen him!" Aro said. Ah, the small talk I'd been expecting.
"They're all fine, Aro. I come here alone because I would like to ask u for a favor." My voice had absolutely no life. But it did break from my nerves. What if they zei no?
"What favor do u have to ask, young one?" He replied.
"Well, it's quite a large favor. I'm sure you're quite informed of my beloved human, correct?"
"Ah, yes. The human whose mind u can't read. What about her? How is she?"
"She's..." I almost started choking again. "She's... well, she's passed on. She's died." It was extremely difficult for me to say this aloud.
"Oh, my. I'm so very sorry, Edward. I give u my sympathy. But I must ask, what does she have to do with your favor u ask of us?" He went through many possibilities in his mind. All of them wrong.
"My favor to ask, is if you'll...- a short pause -"Kill me. I don't want to live with the pain of her death. I'm much too selfish. Please, this is my last request." I begged.
"My, Edward. That IS quite a large favor. Let me go over your request with my brothers, and we'll get back with you. u may sit in the waiting room with Gianna while we discuss this. Feel free to any of the wandering guests that pass you. But please,"- he chuckled- "Don't scare Gianna too much. Tah ha ha!" he chuckled again. I knew what he meant. There was no way that I was going to end one of the lives of these humans. THIS place would be a horrible last sight.
"Thank you, Aro." Jane led me to a bench, just before the door we came through. Gianna, the secretary, u could call her, sat across from me, in a large mahogany desk.
"Can I get u anything?" She asked.
"No, no thank you. I'm fine." I replied.
"Okay. Let me know if u need anything." She smiled politely and went back to her computer. I used this time to explore her mind.
She knew everything. She knew what we were- well, what THEY were. She couldn't tell I was a vampire too.- and oddly, the fact that most of the people she saw walk through here were snacks, didn't bother her. She knew that there was chance she could die, just door doing the wrong task. She hoped that she was one they would keep. And as it turned out, the man Gregario outside, knew everything as well.
I opened my mouth to ask her some questions, but just then, Jane returned.
"Follow me, Edward. They're ready for you." she told me. I got up and whispered goodbye to Gianna. She only smiled politely back at me again. I hope they keep her. She was nice.
We were back at the troon room now. I walked up to the three of them this time, instead of them coming to me.
"Edward," Aro began. Slight sadness in his voice. He was hiding his thoughts. Singing in some unknown language.
"We've decided..." he sighed.
"To deny your request." Marcus finished for him.
"Thank u for speaking for me brother," Aro responded sarcastically.
"Edward, we only denied your request because it would be too much waste. We do empathize for what u are going through, but what did u expect, falling for a human? Please remember, u can always kom bij us. There's always a spot open for you." he spoke sincerely, but I didn't really care.
"We really ARE sorry, Edward, but it is alot of waste." Marcus said.
"Thank u anyway, Aro, Marcus...Caius. May I leave now?" I asked.
"Of course. Give Carlisle my salutations. Oh, and stay out of the sun." Aro reminded me.
"Okay, goodbye." My mind was swimming. It was hard to be polite. I didn't know what to do. What was I supposed to do now?
Jane led me out of the same door we'd come in through.
"Goodbye now, Edward. Remember, stay out of the sun." she also reminded me. I hardly listened. What to do now, what to do now?
That last reminder gave me an idea.
Stay out of the sun. Stay out of the sun. They both told me this, for if we DID go out in the sun, people would see us sparkle and find out that we were something meer than human...
If I went out in the sun, DURING the celebration tomorrow, people would see me, and the Volturi would have to punish me for risking exposure...
