As soon as Mitchell left I crawled under the blankets on my bed. It created a dark cave around me which I craved now because, in the dark, no one could see my tears. Maybe I should have listened to Edward because now that Mitchell was gone I could see what he was talking about. When I thought about it, Mitchell did confuse me. I was even meer confuddled and tongue-tied when he was there. It was just something about him that did that to me but I didn’t know what. Was it smile of his touch of his eyes? Maybe it was his eyes. They were an incredible blue colour and I could stare at them all day. But no human could do that to me. I was so confused and neither Mitchell nor Edward was here.
I curled up into a ball under the blankets and sniffed. I needed help. I needed serious help. Who would I turn to for help on relationships? Not Charlie for sure. He would get all embarrassed and make a lame excuse to run for the hills. I couldn’t write into an agony aunt because there was no specialist agony aunt for Vampzi/Vampire relationships. But was my relationship with Edward really ending? Surely he would see that it isn’t really me when Mitchell’s there? Surely he understands what’s happening? He was the one that was warning me off Mitchell, he must know something.
Maybe I should call him. Apologise for what I did. But what did I do? I shifted under the blankets while trying to recall what I had done wrong to Edward. I was lying on my back when I realised what I had done. I had chosen Mitchell over Edward. I might not have zei to Edward ‘I choose Mitchell over you’ but I had technically done it. I hadn’t listened to a word Edward said, I refused to leave Mitchell and I tried to make Edward go upstairs to revise. What kind of a girlfriend am I? I was horrible and mean. I don’t deserve to have Edward if I’m going to treat him like that. He should just go and leave me to be depressive because that’s what I deserve.
“I think I will be the judge of that.”
I almost screamed when I heard his voice. Not from fright but from happiness. I thought he wouldn’t ever come back.
The blankets lifted off me and I saw Edward standing over me. His beautiful face showed nothing but love and it made me feel very guilty. How can he not hate me for treating him like that?
“I know it wasn’t really you,” he said, lying down volgende to me. He pulled me closer to him, laying my head on his chest. I tried to pull away, I shouldn’t be allowed this close to him after how I acted but he held me there. “I do not blame you. I blame Mitchell.”
“What’s he doing?” I asked, breathing in Edward’s scent. I loved to be this close to him. Sometimes I thought that Edward wasn’t real and it was all just an amazing dream that my imagination had somehow conjured up. Being close to him, smelling his scent and touching his skin proved his existent to me and that he wasn’t just a myth. I wished now that Mitchell was a myth.
“I think it might be some sort of hypnosis,” Edward said, thoughtfully. I could tell he was still pondering this. “It’s like he has u under some sort of control.”
“Great,” I muttered. “I’m going to be one of those freaks that go on a killing spree because some nutter told them to and I will go to prison and get the death penalty and die even though it wasn’t my fault and then my family will be upset and my vrienden and only God knows what will happen to u and-”
“I get it, Kayla,” Edward laughed.
“It could happen!”
“I won’t let it,” Edward squeezed my shoulders.
I looked up into his eyes and saw they were darker than earlier.
“You’ll have to hunt soon,” I told him.
“I know,” he sighed. “But I don’t want to leave u alone. Not now that Mitchell is here.”
“I’ll be fine. Just get Alice to be my bodyguard. She’ll be able to watch out for him.”
“True,” Edward considered. “And it won’t look anything meer than two vrienden shopping.”
“Shopping?!” I sat up and glared at Edward. “Shopping? I didn’t say anything about shopping!”
“Kayla, u zei u wanted Alice to be your bodyguard. What did u think she would do with you? Read a book?”
“I guess I never thought this through properly.”
Edward lay there smiling. He knew what I would do. It wasn’t hard to guess.
“Fine,” I grumbled. “Shopping it is.”
Edward sat up and kissed my forehead.
“Thank you,” he whispered against my skin. “I know you’re doing this for me.”
“I’d do anything for you.” I moved my lips up to his and kissed him gently. Edward’s arms wound around me and his lips crushed against mine. As always, everything was wiped from my mind. The only thing that mattered was Edward.
“Kayla?!”
“Charlie,” Edward whispered in between kisses. “He’s downstairs.”
“So?” I said. I wrapped my arms around his neck so he wouldn’t be able to escape.
“Kayla!”
“He will come upstairs,” Edward warned me.
“And?”
Edward pulled away from me. He was smiling at my reluctance.
“You’re supposed to be studying.”
“I am,” I said. “I’m studying on how to get off with a vampire. Now, please, let me continue.”
He laughed and kissed my nose lightly.
“Go downstairs and see him and maybe u can study vampires later.”
I laughed and moved quickly. I would stay downstairs for as little time as possible and then go back upstairs to continue study.
Charlie was pacing in the living-room when I walked in. He looked very tense, his hands in fists and his eyebrows creased together in frustration.
“Dad, what’s wrong?” I asked. I stood in his line of pacing, stopping him and he looked at me. There was something in his chocolate eyes. I think it was fear.
“Kayla, we have to leave.”
That was not what I thought he would say.
“Leave? What? Why?” My words came out choked. I was completely stunned. I hadn’t expected this. There were no signs to toon that he was thinking of leaving. But then I couldn’t exactly get in his head.
“No time to explain,” Charlie spoke in a rush. “We just have to go. Pack a bag and then come downstairs.”
“We’re leaving now? Dad, I have exams to take.”
“Exams don’t matter now.”
“This is my education, they do matter. I want to pass high school.”
“Just do as I say, Michaela!” Charlie half shouted at me, his face turning red. “Pack a bag and then come back downstairs!”
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I shouted back. “Why do we have to leave? Explain now!”
“There’s no time! Go and pack!”
“Charlie, tell me!”
“JUST GO PACK!”
I stepped back from Charlie’s rage. The fear in his eyes had increased and I was getting scared too.
“Is something wrong?”
Edward materialised at my side. He put an arm around my waist protectively.
“This is none of your business, Vampire!” Charlie spoke maliciously to Edward. He never spoke like that to him. Something was seriously wrong but he wouldn’t drop the stupid barrier.
“Anything that concerns Kayla is my business.” Edward spoke just as nastily back.
“Edward-”
“You aren’t married to her, so stay out!”
“Charlie-”
“Maybe I should be!” Edward shouted. “I love her enough!”
That shut Charlie up. And me. Edward turned to face me and looked me straight in the eyes.
I knew what he was going to say and I didn’t know if I wanted to hear it.
“Marry me?”
