A little cry woke us both the volgende morning. "What's that?" I asked groggily. I checked the bedside clock. In my opinion, it was too early to get up. A seconde cry joined the first, and yesterday came back in a rush. I bolted up in bed, and the rush of blood made me dizzy. "Oh!" I stumbled out of bed and nearly tripped. Jake caught and steadied me. "The twins," I told him, pulling on my robe. "They're crying. Let's go." The twins had slept through the night, not making a peep. I guess it was time for that to change.
"It's okay, shhh!" I said, picking up Jennifer and rocking her. "You're okay. We're here." Jake stood volgende to me with Jeth, also rocking and shushing. In a few minutes, the babies were quiet. They stared up at us with their big, black eyes full of curiosity and wonder. "I'll bet they're hungry," Jacob said, looking down at Jeth. Jeth was nibbling Jake's finger. I smiled. "Right." We went downstairs and Jacob found a box of baby formula that Aunt Alice must have stashed there a few weeks ago. He followed the directions on the box to heat it up and poured it in two plastic bottles with rubber nipples. We each took a baby and a bottle, and within minuten the twins were sucking it down. They seemed to like it.
I lifted Jeth to burp him and sighed. "Well, at least we won't have to worry about them drinking blood," I said. "That was always my problem." Jake wrinkled his nose. "Yeah. Disgusting." I laughed and rolled my eyes. "Thanks," I zei sarcastically. After breakfast, we dressed the twins to go and meet the family. To please Aunt Alice, I dressed Jennifer in those tan pants and lacey white overhemd, shirt I had commentaar gegeven positively on that day. Jake and I finished getting ready as well, then we wrapped Jeth and Jennifer in warm blankets because it was cold outside.
Our breath frosted in the cold air once we were outside. Jacob ended up taking both babies; I doubted they would be cold so close to Jacob's body heat.
Aunt Alice must have heard us coming; when we came into view of the house, she dashed outside to meet us, her eyes on my face. "Hey, Nessie! Today I thought we could go shopping again. You'll need meer clothes because--" her eyes flashed down to my newly flat stomach, then up to Jacob's hands. "What--?" She gaped at the two babies in Jacob's arms. "Aunt Alice, say hello to Jeth and Jennifer Black," I said, pointed to each baby. Aunt Alice squealed so loud that Jeth whimpered. "Oh my gosh!!! When did this happen? WHY DIDN'T u TELL ME??" She took Jennifer out of Jacob's arms and looked at her closely, then returned her and took Jeth. "Oh, Nessie! They're so beautiful! Congratulations, both of you. What are their full names?" I braced myself for her reaction. "Jeth Emmett Black and...Jennifer Alice Black." Her golden eyes sparkled. "Jennifer Alice? u named her after me?" I nodded. "You've been so good and helpful. It was appropriate." She handed Jeth carefully back to Jacob, then hugged me so hard that she almost broke my bones. Luckily, she restrained herself just in time and let go. She continued to gush about the babies, and eventually the other members of the house heard her commotion and came outside as well.
"Nessie!" Mom and dad got to me first. They each took a baby. "Hi, grandparents," Jake zei grinning. They looked up, shocked. Uncle Emmett came up behind them and laughed. "Time for retirement, eh, bro? Layin' low, that sort of thing." he punched Dad's shoulder. Dad smiled up at him. "Carlisle is as active as ever. And you're a great uncle," he reminded him. "That sounds like a royal title!" Uncle Emmett laughed. "Let me hold my nephew. Did I hear u say his name was Jeth Emmett?" "You're also godfather, along with Uncle Jasper, Seth, and Sam," I confirmed. "And Aunt Alice, Aunt Rose, and Leah are godmothers to Jennifer." Aunt Rose heard this and pushed past everyone to hold Jennifer.
"She's beautiful, Nessie!" Aunt Rose zei as Jennifer curled her hand around Aunt Rose's finger. "Great job and congratulations. To both of you," she added, looking warily at Jacob's face. She was STILL a little embarrased about that dag at the airport, so many weeks ago. It hadn't been the same between Jake and Aunt Rose since.
Grandma held both of the babies close. "Such beautiful children," she said. "They're lovely. Absolutely perfect. I'm so proud of you!" she hugged us delicately, careful not to hurt the babies.
Uncle Jasper hung back a little, unsure if he should come closer of not. "C'mon!" I encouraged, holding Jeth out to him. I wasn't worried at all. Uncle Jasper's self-control was a lot better than it had been. He held Jeth a little bit away from his body; cringing at the warmth, but in a few minuten seemed comfortable. He let Jeth suck on his finger and even hummed a few bars of a song to him.
"We need a party!" Aunt Alice announced.
"Alice--no," I said.
She pouted. "Why not? Half of the godparents aren't even here! Don't u think they deserve to see their godchildren, too?"
Jacob looked at me and I sighed. "Oh, fine."
She clapped her hands and danced around. "Yay! Thank-you! The party will be in a few hours everyone!" she dashed inside to prepare. Slowly, everyone else went inside, too. Jake and I followed and played with Jeth and Jennifer in the living room while Aunt Alice whirled around us like a hurricane, decorating for the party. In a few hours, as promised, the house was decorated with roze and blue balloons, lights, and plenty of food. The guests started to arrive as Aunt Alice called them.
"Seth!" Jacob scrambled up from the floor and bounced over to Seth. "How's it goin', man?" "Great," Seth answered, his grin as wide as ever. "Better since I learned about these two." He crouched down volgende to me from where I was volgende to the babies. "Hey, Jeth," he crooned. "He looks exactly like you, Jake! 'Cept without the frown all the time." Seth grinned up at Jake, but Jake wasn't frowning now. "Hey, dad!" a voice called from the doorway. "Don't I get a hug?" Jake's grin grew wider and he turned towards the door. "What's up, Leah?" he gave her the hug. "Do u want to see your goddaughter?" "Of course I do," she replied, scooping up Jennifer. "Wow, she's cute! She looks a lot like both of you! Congrats, guys! Will she be a werewolf, too? I'm just [i]dying[i] for another girl wolf!" I glanced up in panic just in time to see Jake's grin disappear and his eyes turn flat black. His hands started to shake, and he was having a hard time keeping control, terrified to phase with Jennifer in her arms, but also dying to make Leah pay for what she'd just said. Seth tugged on his trembling arm. "Jake, stop," he said. "Cool it, bro." Jake started to growl at Leah, big snarls ripping out of his chest. Leah looked absolutely terrified, and she cringed away, still holding Jennifer. "It's not definate," I whispered, touching Leah's leg as I spoke. Her eyes unfocused, seeing a replay of last night's conversation, and she nodded. "Forgive me, Jake," she said. "I'm so sorry." Jake nodded sharply once and turned away. Leah looked apologetically down at me. "Sorry," she said. "Really." "It's fine," I assured her quickly. I touched her again, and she saw Jacob's reaction from last night when we'd talked about it again. "Wow," she said. "I'm so sorry." "Don't be," I disagreed. "He's just sensative about it, that's all." "Well, what do [i]you[i] think?" she asked, wary of the same reaction of Jake's. "Well you've seen what I think," I told her. "But I can't say it would be [i]all[i] bad, u know? Someone has to carry on the tradition," I told her, half smiling. She grinned. "Right. Well, they're beautiful, of course. Congrats again." She smiled, put Jennifer down, and walked in the same direction as Jake had.
A pair of long, tanned legs stepped in front of me. I looked up, then grinned. "Sam!" I got up quickly, put my arms around his waist and hugged him tightly. "How are you, goddaddy?" Sam laughed. "Pretty good. Is this Jeth?" "Yup, sure is." He picked up Jeth carefully. Jeth looked ridiculously tiny in his arms, though he was a pretty big baby. Sam crooned to him like all the others. "So what's with Jake?" he asked a few minuten later. "He just blew everyone off all of a sudden." "Oversensitivity," I told him. "He's afraid about the kids' futures, that's all." "Oh, werewolf," Sam realized. "Of course. He shouldn't be, though. He shouldn't worry until Jeth grows a foot and a half," he joked. I smiled back. "That's what I told him. But he won't listen." I frowned. Sam shrugged. "It'll be hard on him, sure. It's obvious he really loves these kids. Who would want that life for their family? If u want, I can go talk to him." "I'm not sure it'll do any good," I said. "But if u want to, then go right ahead. Leah's there to, and probably Seth." Sam nodded and handed Jeth back to me.
Most of the guests had to get going in a few hours, so the party had to end sometime.
I gave Seth a hug. "Thanks for coming!" I told him. He hugged me back. "I was happy to come!" He hugged Jennifer and Jeth good-bye, too, then warily shook Jacob's hand and ducked out the door.
"Bye, Leah!" I said. "Bye," she replied, then whispered in my ear: "He wouldn't listen to me when I tried to apologize. u know Jake, he needs TONS of time to cool down. But when he does, tell him I'm really sorry will you?" "Sure," I replied. "He'll be fine, don't worry." she smiled and turned to Jake. She gave him a short hug and then followed Seth out the door. Jacob stared after her. "Thanks for coming, man," Jacob said, shaking Sam's hand. "Happy to," he said. "And u both take care now. Come visit soon!" He ducked out as well.
I leaned closer to inpakken, wrap my arm around Jacob's waist. "Are u okay?" I asked. "No." his voice was flat, expressionless. I sighed. "Jacob, for the thousandth time. Worry. About. It. When. It. Happens. If u worry now, u won't enjoy them growing up as normal kids; their first words, their first steps, their first dag of school...You need to take life one step at a time. Forget about Leah for now. She didn't know any better. Call her tomorrow, make things right. She feels horrible. If we have to, we'll check with Grandpa [i]every day[i] to see if the werewolf possiblity percentages go up of down, if that makes u happy. For now, enjoy our kids." Jacob's glance flickered down to the carpet where Jeth and Jennifer were wiggling around and giggling. He smiled and went to them; bending down to look at them closer. "I love them so much," he said, watching them play. "Parenthood is so scary sometimes. It's not just the werewolf possibility; it's everything! u could be gone and I'll accidentally hurt them. Feed them the wrong things and they could choke. Lay them down wrong in the kinderbedje, wieg and they could die!" "Ugh!" I told him. "You need to stop thinking like this! I am not perfect a perfect mom, nor are u a perfect dad. But u could [i]try to be. We can't be perfect, but we can surely try. And, for the last time I hope, [i]we are in this together no matter what happens[i]. We all know that being a werewolf is not ideal, but we'll get through it. u did; your dad got through watching you, your grandfather did, and Jeth and Jennifer will, too. It won't be easy, but we'll have to make do. And if u can't grasp that, then u won't enjoy this feeling; the feeling of being here, with me, and our children. Our [i]family[i]. You'll miss everything, Jacob. And I don't want to experiance it alone. These are [i]our[i] kids; [i]our[i] flesh and blood, [i]our[i] responsibility. For now, all we can do is try to provide the best life for them. Let's worry about feeding them avondmaal tonight and breakfast tonight. Nothing meer complex than that for now."
Jacob looked up from the kids and met my pleading gaze. "I don't know if I can," he whispered brokenly. "You [i]must[i]," I told him, taking his face between my hands. He closed his eyes. "I'm not going to let u miss this experiance, Jake," I whispered. "You might not get it again." He reached up to put a burning hand over mine; he squeezed my fingers and opened his eyes. "I can try," he told me. "It might take a while, but I'll try. For you. For Jeth. For Jennifer." "Living one dag at a time," I reminded him. "Taking what comes at us the best we can," he said. "Forever," I zei firmly. "Forever," he agreed. He kissed me softly, then pressed his forehead to mine. We sat together and watched our children playing calmly on the floor, taking our lives one step at a time.
