scarletunicorn The only downside I see with making an original new princess a lesbian is that, if she's given poor writing, people will just reduce her to her sexuality similar as to how some people reduce Tiana to her race and nothing else. At least with Elsa or Merida (Which is weird, she's also single yet nobody is making a campaign to give her a girlfriend, mmm...), they already have a personality and a character that sets them a part of their sexuality. So while they like girls, and it's a part of them, no, that isn't all that they are. Imo it's no different that making all asians in Mulan honorable or the Native Americans so in nature in Pocahontas (or that Mexican stereotype festival that was the Book of Life). Stereotyping is imo pretty bad. New idea- why can't Moana be a lesbian? Nobody seems to be talking about that, strangely...

WinterSpirit809 ^True. I wouldn't mind Moana being gay, and it is strange to see Elsa being the only one people are campaigning to be gay, though I do think it has a thing to do with her popularity. But I do see what you mean with the poorly written character. I mean I would hope it wouldn't completely surround her sexuality, so there would be room for development. I mean as I said in the article, a huge reason why I think they shouldn't have Elsa gay is the same reason why I wouldn't want her straight- because it would require a whole new storyline between the relationship with Elsa and another person. They would have to introduce a new character and develop it and I'd much rather have the movie center around Anna and Elsa's relationship. Anyway thank you so much for your opinion!

ajotma I consider Elsa to be asexual. Not all princesses need a love interest! Anna already does, so I wish Disney would at least keep Elsa single.

UnholyNoise @scarletunicorn - for what it's worth, I've seen plenty of people (mostly on tumblr) asking for lesbian!Moana. But I think the movement for Elsa just overshadows it because of how culturally huge Frozen is. I'll stick by my reply to dclairmont's (awesome) article on this: Using an established character is just a better idea; the audience knows who they are and is already emotionally tied to them. A new lgbt character is going to be unfairly reduced to their orientation and written off before anyone bothers to get to know her. Also I don't really get the whole "we can't use Elsa because it says if you're single you must be gay" thing - obviously if they're gonna use a familiar character for this they need it to be someone who isn't already in a relationship.

WinterSpirit809 ^Well, to be honest, if Elsa does turn out gay, she is still going to be unfairly reduced- even though we already know her already. About the stereotype thing- that is why I think they would create a new character, because if they use a familiar character, it will turn out being a stereotype. And to be honest, I would like to see a sequel, Disney makes, where someone who wasn't in a relationship in the first movie is put in a relationship. misscindyspice I agree with a lot of what you're saying! I think it would be great to have Elsa be a lesbian, but it probably be more interesting as an original character because then we could have a brand new plot and characters. In relation to you thinking that Elsa is asexual, you have to remember that asexual people are capable of having romantic feelings, as the definition of asexual is [b]"a person who has no sexual feelings or desires."[/b] I think the word you're looking for is aromantic, or a person who doesn't experience [i]romantic[/i] attraction.

I especially love your end paragraph, my compliments to you for that! :D If it were to happen soon: I think you make a really great argument for there being a new princess that gets to start gay but I think it would be a more powerful story if the 2 concepts were combined and it was a new princess but she started off not being able to be honest in the beginning of the movie and her coming out being the journey of her film, to show the realities of that kind of situation. I think it's important to show people the unique struggle that homosexuals face while also showing the great pride in finally coming out and being who they are. I have known quite a few homosexual people who were in the closet for so long and they could never truly be themselves for fear of how their own parents (or others) would react and I honestly thought it was awful. I think situations like that should be highlighted because although some people might disagree with this argument, knowing someone who is homosexual does make those around them more inclined to accept homosexuality because it makes it more real and they see the struggle firsthand. Since most studies show that less than 4% of the American population are homosexual, it shows that most Americans have most likely never met a homosexual to know anything about their life or have so many years of preconceived notions changed. So I do think showing a powerful story from such a prestigious company would definitely make a big impact as well as expose a large audience to the realities of this debate. All of that being said, since Disney is a global company with business in countries that do have religious and political beliefs against homosexuals (including some religious people within America against homosexuals), I can see why Disney might not want to cross those lines and risk offending a large amount of their customers. Since they were the first company to openly hire homosexuals though, I don't think it's out of the question if Disney will do it but more so a question of when.

BennieBear27 I agree that Elsa isn't the prime candidate to be the first gay Disney princess. What I liked about her most was how she didn't end up with a guy at the end of Frozen, which was pretty new for Disney. The only Disney princess to stay single is Merida (why is no one saying she's lesbian?). I also like the idea of it being original and new character rather than one we've gotten to know for being so independent. Audreygracey412 has the same idea for me: the film could have our main character go through the struggles of being homosexual and having to accept it and come out. A drawback of having a gay princess is definitely culture. Not just in countries where films featuring homosexuality get banned, but in the United States, too. I used to love the show Good Luck Charlie! Then it ended. The reason? In one episode, Charlie has a play date with her friend Willow. Willows parents come over with her to meet Charlie's family. Willow has two moms, which I thought nothing of. Looking back on the episode, I find it cool how they had two regular women be married and raising a child. They weren't stereotypes, they looked and acted like your usual, ever-day parents. Unfortunately some organization didn't like it and complained. The show got cancelled, all because the crew was trying to be accepting of everyone and include some lgbt characters that weren't stereotypes. Those two moms were on the show about 7 minutes, and Good Luck Charlie was forced to end. If we had an entire movie censored around a gay character? A few minutes of a one-time characters who happen to be lesbian, show gets cancelled. An entire hour and a half of following a gay character? The world would explode over it. I'm not anti-lgbt. My uncle is gay and has been with his boyfriend since before J was born. Until I was five, my next door neighbors was a lesbian couple with 3 kids. And two doors down is another lesbian couple, also with 2 kids. What I'm trying to say is, Disney might never have an openly gay character. I honestly think that they might be afriad. They don't want their movies to get banned, profits would go down. And if they do, she's likely to be stereotypical. I don't want Elsa to be out first Disney princess to be gay. I want it to be a new character. A girl whose story has to do with her struggles as a lesbian and coming out. But I honestly think Disney is afriad to. That's why I mentioned Good Luck Charlie. It's a good example of how poorly people can react to seeing LGBT characters on a show for kids. I'm not 100% against Elsa being gay though. If she is, then fine. I can deal. To be honest, Im going to be forced to see Frozen 2 by my little sister (she loves it, I hate it.) Hopefully Disney won't be afraid to give us a gay character, and soon.
