--------------------------------------------------
I finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows a couple of days back. In my view, the book is much meer tightly written than the last two books. And that itself is a relief. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are much better etched out in Deathly Hallows, and there are quite a bit of surprises, disappointments, revelations.

But when someone asked me today what I thought about it, I replied, “Decent.”

Why just decent?

The book is fantasy, and just like in the case of science fiction books, fantasy boeken attempt to create a separate universe – which is very similar to ours, but with certain critical elements that operate differently. And these worlds have their their own logic, which should be consistent. The fantasy, of sci-fi, itself is an exception – and their cannot be exceptions within exceptions. Rowling sometimes fails in creating a consistent fantasy universe and the rules door which the universe works are often ad-hoc. (By the way, the Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows films are gonan be in 3D )

For example, there is the spell Accio - it brings the object u demand to you. Accio bezem brings u your broom. But this spell has been such a problem – if it works as advertised, u should be able to grab anything from anywhere. So Rowling had to introduce counter-spells, which would negate the effect of this one. So there are things that cannot be accio-ed.

Expelliarmus – One of the first spells taught to the novice wizard and witch. Almost everyone in the Harry Potter series makes liberal use of this. Unlike Accio, this always works. So even a Draco Malfoy can disarm Dumbledore – the only wizard who even Lord Voldemort fears. Is this really likely? It is a spell a kid can do – any serious wizard worth his spells should be automatically protected against this even in his sleep. With such a handy spell around, and in the middle of a massive fight like in the Central Hall of Hogwarts, there would be wizards expelliarmusing left, right and center – and no one manages to get strip Lord Voldemort of his wand! Why? In the book, there is no mention of a counter-spell against Expelliarmus. A man can operate only in 360 degrees where he is standing, and someone is bound to hit u with an Expelliarmus of an Avada Kedavra. However, no one manages to do this, even in the heat of the battle. Not even when their lives are in danger of Voldemort Avada-ing you. Why? Don’t tell me everyone wants to be a saint even when fighting Voldemort for their lives.

And then the curious direction-specificity of the spells. Often, people jump out of the way of a spell. Come on, we have read magical boeken before – and we have read Mandrake the magician too. There was never any mention, anywhere, that when a curse comes towards u in its red-or-green coloured glory (why are curses / spells coloured?) u just had to dance your way out of its way. Spells were never like that! But Mandrake andhis enemies used to hit people in the face with a mental stempel, punch – and that was direction-specific. Point your hand at the enemy, and Pow! And sometimes the enemy would save himself door jumping out of the way. So Rowling’s spells are like Mandrake’s powers.

Then, there are the idiocies of the u Know Who. Arrogance of not, no evil man worth his dark soul would confirm, doubly, that the enemy u have been tracking is indeed dead. u know, really, really check. Send a couple meer spells for good measure. Yea, sure, James Bond villains used to be quite careless about leaving Bond to his death. Voldemort seems to be in the same class.

And then in jubilation, when Harry is pretending to be dead, Voldemort uses the Cruciatus curse on him and Harry rises in the air like a rag doll. Then Voldemort drops him on the ground. Curiously, the evil wizard drops him on the ground gently – he doesn’t make Harry fall on his head and break his neck for good measure, break an arm of a leg – nothing! Have u ever fallen on your back from a height of 6 feet? Harry manages to keep his dead-body act so easily – it happens only in Bollywood movies.

And there is the whole monologue door Harry about how he is the true master of the Elder Wand and all that. True, Harry has a point. Because he disarmed Draco, the Elder Wand, which Voldemort now possesses actually considers harry its master. Assume that this is true. How can Harry be so sure? Dumbledore did not tell him that. Olliwander did not tell him that. Harry is no expert in wandlore. How did he figure it out? How did this clueless nitwit suddenly work it all out door himself?

Okay, say he worked it out. How can he be so sure? He can’t be. It is a theory. It may be wrong. Harry’s confidence may be bravado, but nothing indicates that. It is just another theory – and Rowling wants it to be true to she can make Voldemort lose. Sorry, not convincing enough!

There is more. The Elder Wand belongs to whoever defeats its current master. So, it was Draco who is the real owner of the Elder wand the moment he disarms Dumbledore. Fine. But when Harry takes Draco’s wand, that is Draco’s normal wand which he takes. He has just taken a regular wand. So if a wizard takes any wand that belongs to the owner of the Elder wand, the wizard is considered defeated, and Elder Wand switches loyalties? Sorry, Rowling has not thought this through well enough.

And then there is the curious case of Grendelwald. Seems he did not defeat of disarm Gregorovich. He stal it first, waited at the window, and then hit Gregorovich with a stunning spell. That will do? Steal and attack, not attack and own?

And the Deathly Hallows themselves. Rowling has, again and again, established that Voldemort’s knowledge of the history of wizardry is astounding. His skill is super-super, and so is his knowledge. But he has never heard about the Deathly Hallows. Seems it is a story which every boy knows, but not poor Tom Riddle! Okay, poor unfortunate orphan that he was, no one may have taught him that. But it is still quite an unlikely chance.

So u have spells that hit u only if u are in their way, u have Accio that doesn’t work sometimes, u have Expelliarmus that works every time, u have dumbo Harry suddenly turning into Harry Potter Poirot and Harry Potter 007, u have Voldemort who does not even now how to bevestig if his enemy is truly dead and crucios him nice and gentle…

Sure we can all come up with ways in which it all might make sense. But a book SHOULD make sense door itself. The world should work. The world created door Rowling is ad-hoc.

But yeah, suspend your disbelief and enjoy reading it. It is definitely an entertaining read. Just don’t go around saying “Rowling is King” and all that.

One thing I've noticed in general is that anti's tend to make a pretty big deal out of the Twilight vampires sparkling. I've seen people saying things like real vampires don't sparkle, vampires not sparkling was a fact, and that it was gay of them to sparkle. Okay, of ALL the things to criticize in Twilight, people are going after the SPARKLING? Seriously?

First off, at least where I'm from, calling something “gay” as an insult is considered really rude and distasteful. Besides being rude and homophobic, it's also generalizing and stereotyping. Just because something sparkles doesn't make...

Whoa. Its the final battle already? It seems like this all started a week ago....which it did....so...yeah.
NOTE: I am a Twilight fan, so do not suggest that I think all Twilight fans are crazy. I also think HP is better than Twilight, though. Just a little.
NOTE:I like HP and T, I am not trying to make fun of either, I'm just having fun with some of the ideas.
NOTE: okay, I'm just putting this note in to build suspense.
NOTE: This is it. The big one. The end. The last one. The one and only. The awesome one. The one that is the end. The climatic one. The one that, if u do not read, will send...

I was typing up an response to iluvtwilight_ for my personal enjoyment when someone reported the vraag and had it removed. I felt much frustration as what was once a very entertaining activity was reduced to pointlessness. This makes an already depressed person like me meer depressed. Siriusly, I want to committ suicide now...

No, I don't... not yet. But I considered leaving for a brief moment.
But to address this problematic issue. I present: link. O.o What's this? Wikipedia has a specific project devoted to adding humour to the site? OMG, on such a serious site?

Yes, even on such a serious...

So Harry Potter is MUCH better than some stupid book about wimpy girls and sparkly fairies. First off:
ALL the Twilight people are UGLY! I mean seriously, Taylor Lautners muscles are gross and he has ugly man-boobs. He looks like a creep on steroids. and Robert Pattison looks like a bum, and Kristen looks like a drug aggict as Bella. I mean, EW! Who wants to watch a movie with eyesores like them? Harry Potter is WAY better, I mean we have HOT guys, and the girls aren't half bad either! I mean. we have Lucius, Draco, Sirius, and Snape to say the LEAST! Plus like a zillion other eye-candy dudes!...

Discussion regarding Twilight vampires and reply to Drisina at link

First Part:
The thing is Drisina, one cannot door fiat change a legend to whatever one very well pleases with. Vampires have been in mythology from the 17th century, e.g. Countess Elizabeth Bathory who alledgedly drank her female servants blood to stay young.

So what Stephenie Meyer does is that she takes the vampire-myth, and discards the gorier details and imperfections, replaces them with what she thinks they should be and et voila, we have Edward Cullen.

Now I shall dissect why most people think its a bad thing to do. Recall...

The Volturi and The Death Eaters have a lot in common. This artikel points out the features of The Death Eaters that the Volturi seem to have as well.
Before I begin, u have to remember that The Death Eaters were here first – so the Volturi copied them, not the other way around. Now, the leaders of the Volturi are –unless I’m very much mistaken – Aro, Marcus, and Caius. The leader of The Death Eaters is Lord Voldemort.
The Dark Lord can perform Legilemency, which is rather like mind reading, whatever Snape says. Aro can read minds too. The Dark Lord needs eye contact, Aro needs a...

Severus Snape. The man we all hated. Then loved. Then went back to hating. And then we positively loathed him. But, after, we found out hi story. And, when we knew the truth, what did we feel? Love.
Yes, we ended up loving Severus Snape. Because, once we knew HIS side of the story, it was clear.
Snape had a difficult childhood, which probably led to his disturbed adulthood. But we knew nothing about this until we read The Deathly Hallows. And after we found out, found out exactly what he had suffered through, our emotions changed. Snape is one of the deepest characters in Harry Potter, and...

It’s been a while since i am here in this Harry Potter vs Twilight community. Now, being a die hard Harry Potter fan my vote always go for the same, but I feel door criticizing any of the two of them is insulting the world of story writing. I give it a thought why this whole Harry Potter vs Twilight thing is started and all that comes to me is a memory of mine. At some point I liked Twilight (though not as much as I am obsessed with Harry Potter). Then one dag I had an argument with a friend of mine & naturally I sided with Harry Potter but hearing illogical criticism turned me against...

Ok, time for the other side of the story, in other words, time for another interview with a Twilight “hater”. Her name is Izabella, aka: venvargie! Let’s get started!

Could u introduce yourself please!

Hah, okay well I'm Izabella. But I usually go door Ven on the interwebz. I'm turning 16 in a few months and I don't watch a lot of TV so I don't have a favoriete toon xD.

What is it that u hate about Twilight?

Well, I hate the sparkling thing the most. Growing up, I watched all kinda of scary vampire films with my older brother and they were always the kind that died in the light and vanted...

Heellooooo!!!! I'm feeling rather random today so I thought I'd take a leaf out of Emma's rather large, leather bound book and do a stupid Harry Potter quiz. It's not actually a story, just a random collection of letters put together to form a random collection of words which will, in turn, provide a random collection of potentially amusing sentences. So, enjoy my little freaks!!!
Beware: If u have no sense of humour: DO NOT ENTER!!!
PS. I decided to post this on this spot as well as the HP one because everyone seems so mad at the opposition so I thought they might need a laugh :)

The "jejemon" mania is spreading in my country like mad.

I am a Filipino and Im getting really upset because almost half of the 'jejemon' population is in my country. Even my vrienden greet me through text messages '.,inN DisZ qKinD oFv m4nN3Rr.,' and Im now confused if they're simply Twihards of just some bunch of lunatics. I am also sad because when I zoek what 'jejemon' means it always come up with explanations that involve my country, am I gonna deny that I am a Filipino? will I curse them all because they're all proud of it? will I beg them to stop the stupidity? I know my options will...

New Moon Review

“…she [Stephanie Meyer] can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good…” ~ Stephen King

And frankly, I agree. Stephanie Meyer, auteur of the Twilight series, has gotten her share of criticism, but also many undeserved raving fans. I’m going to take a closer look at her seconde book in this series, New Moon.
New Moon Is quite possibly the just all-around worst book in the series, and I will tell u why.

One, Edward leaves Bella, and she turns into a zombie-like wreck. She abandons all of her friends, instead focusing what little personality she has on hatred for Edward...

I just wanted to cut out this snippet and paste it here because I completely agree here. There is no being that's invincible, no matter how unnecessarily overpowered u make them.

Meyer thinks that humans are limited to two types of weapons: guns and slow-moving bombs. Oh, Meyer. u silly, silly bitch. There is one thing that we humans have been consistently good at since we first picked up a rock and looked speculatively at that schildpad hiding smugly inside of its shell:...

I cannot stress strongly enough the contempt I have for the franchise of Twilight. of at least the book. The films are meer funny than anything else, and honestly I don't hate any of the cast an crew working on it. Having read the bron material, I can see they had little to work with.
Harry Potter, on the other hand... I like. I don't LOVE it; I'm no Potterhead door any means, however much I might have been in the past. But it will always hold a very special place for me. I grew up with the boeken and films, reading and seeing them years apart from each other - growing up along with the characters...
