I don’t know when it started going down hill for me but I just did. I think that my enjoyment started to waver when Alice decided that she might be attracted to Takumi, to me that seemed like an inaccurate portrayal of asexuality, but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt because everyone experiences sexuality differently. I also really didn't like how Alice spoke of her ex. I feel like she brought that on herself for not being upfront about things. As an asexual, that would be one of the FIRST things I discuss with any potential partner (granted I'm aromantic too lol). But I feel like honesty is key and I hate how Margot was demonized for Alice's mistake. I also didn't like that Alice accused her of being 'hyper-sexual'. Sex is 100% natural and so is the desire for it.
To be honest I wan't very fond of the writing style either. The parenthesis just weren't dong it for me. I'd rather have read either a first person book or something like, "insert sentence in italics", Alice thought. I guess this can be chalked up to this being a debut novel so there's always room for improvement, yada yada yada.
I also didn't care for the constant references to tumblr. I think that making calls to pop culture is fine in moderation, but personally I think it can be kind of cringy if it's done too much or done the wrong way. Like I just came from 'Generation Dead' where the author mentioned a different goth rock band every chapter. I love me some goth rock but it got super cringy by the end. This book wasn't as bad, but tbh tumblr itself makes me cringe (idk why I still use it lol), so hearing it mentioned unironically just threw me off.
I think the other issue I had with this book is that I just couldn't get attached to any of the characters. Like I didn't hate or dislike any of them, but none of them really grabbed my attention. Alice was a pretty cute character but at times her peppiness kinda annoyed me; I've never really been a fan of happy go lucky characters so this is absolutely a matter of taste.
What I did like about this book is that the author created a book that gave insight into the asexual community and I can appropriate that. I also liked some of the issues discussed or mentioned, like how difficult it can be to pay for college. I do think that Kann made some valid points there.
Which honestly, I feel like this entire book is just a matter of tastes. It has received so many gushing reviews. I do appreciate what this book was trying to do; the characters were diverse and what not. But it just kind of fell short for me. Likely because my experience with asexuality is just so much different.
Long story short I haven't had such mixed feelings on a book in a long time.
No, I give the author an A for effort but she really missed the mark and the point of Asexuality. Major disappointment! 😒
