She's a tad bit boring to me. I don't see why so many people make such a big deal about her. Yes, she's beautiful, likes to read books, and falls in love with a beast, but other than that there's nothing too special about her, in my opinion. Don't hate on me Belle fans!!!
Point A - Ariel has a healthy amount of vocal haters to balance her out. Point B - Ariel is recognized for her flaws as well as her virtues by her fans, while Belle is recognized only for her virtues. Point C - A lot lot of reasons everyone loves Belle can easily be countered. What I'm getting at is, Belle is a great character. But she is in no way worthy of the amount of popularity she receives. At least Ariel is a significantly flawed and relatable character. (Seriously, how can people relate to Belle? Her personality is so rare, I can't even understand)
I think Belle was made to be more of a role-model and Ariel isn't all that great but I see so much love for her. Whenever I talk to someone about Disney or who their favorite is it's always Ariel. She's not that great of a character. Belle isn't my favorite either but Ariel get's more love and attention.
@Jessikaroo actually if you think about it, her personality is pretty normal. Well if you ignore looking beyond the face which I agree is impossible. But let's see....she hates douche-bags, likes to do what she wants, begs to be free but won't take the chance (which a LOT of humans don't do as teenagers. Heck they don't even get the chance!!! Where do you find a sea-witch when you want one?! Sheesh,Karma.) ,she loves books, AND she takes the romance level slow. To do these things, you obviously just have to be a human who lives in an urban area. It's not impossible in my eyes.
It's a close tie, but I honestly think we all love Ariel because of how she's a mermaid, she swims, and the fact that she's so fond of things we take for granted everyday. Like spoons. Yeah, she LOVES spoons. If she was a normal human like Belle would she be as daring and fond of gadgets and gizmos? No,she wouldn't be. Let's all confess, at first...we only like her because of the small stuff but when we dig DEEPER...we're all geniuses and come up with more ideas to love her because she tries to outsmart sharks, takes the chance, DEATHLY CHANCES, and is kind of a fan-girl. Or should I say FIN-girl?
Belle might be loved more but she deserves it more in my opinion. Her movie was just one of the best and there's no one like her really, even though some would say she's boring.
I think both of them are overrated in some way but both of them do deserve SOME of the love they get. I just chose Belle because Ariel's higher on my list.
@hajirah4 You're examining her personality on a surface level. When in all actuality, Belle doesn't have a lot of realistic reaction to a lot of stuff. On a deeper level, NO ONE is like Belle. I think that's why people like her. They don't relate to her, they want to BE her.
@Jessikaroo -Well I always thought that everything about Belle other than her liking a beast was normal. Those surface level things are basically describing her personality because....well....she doesn't really have a lot of it. She doesn't do a lot of daring or crazy stuff, and the movie didn't really show anything of her personality so of course i'd have to base it on the surface.
She's a horrible character and doesn't deserve the love she gets, that's why she's more overrated than Belle, who at least, like pretty_angel92 said, is a good role model.
Jessicaro, good points. Also, I would like to point at the fact that the question is about which princess is more overrated, not about which of them is a better role model in your opinion and I think it's fair to say that Ariel gets a pretty EQUAL amount of love and criticism from both her fans and her haters whereas Belle either gets passionate love or people are indifferent to her like I am. It's hard to find a well written and valid critical analysis of Belle's character anywhere on fanpop or come across the level of aggression that Ariel's fans have to face when defending her and regardless of what princess you prefer those are proven facts. Belle to me is a flat character. Is it a sybjective opinion? Yes. However, a lot of people would confront me for that and argue with me trying to point at all those amazing qualities they persoinally see in Belle. While if I come up with a list of objective flaws that Ariel has even her fans are going to acknowledge them. Which is why I definitely go with Belle. To add to this, there is literally NOTHING about Belle that ALL the other princesses wouldn't do better or any unique quality that other princesses don't posess.
I don't feel like rewriting my points, so I'll just copy and paste from another poll I answered...
"Belle. OMFG, this chick has SO overrated! The only reason people think she's 'odd' is because of her father. Besides that, there is nothing, and i mean NOTHING wrong with her! She takes Miss Perfect to a whole new level! NO FLAWS! AT ALL! Unless you count Stockholm Syndrome, which is debatable...But that's not the point! She makes no major mistakes! Isn't the whole point of a fairy tale to teach a lesson?!? All her 'lesson' teaches is that it's okay to trust your captor if you think you can CHANGE him! That kind of attitude is not going to fly in the real world! And to be perfect?!? Good luck trying that!Just because her movie was a ground-breaking success does not mean she is the idol that EVERYONE has to worship. I seriously don't hate Belle; it's just the staggering amount of fangirl/boys that disturb me! Which I don't get WHY are so obsessed with her in the first place! It's not AT ALL like the Ariel fangirls/boys, who actually have a reason to fangirl/boy (geez, there needs to be a unisex 'fan' term!) over them, as they actually HAVE a personally besides being perfect! Ariel has flaws, which makes her more relatable. No one in her family understood why she liked the human world, and when her father found out, he just exploded! Yes, I understand the issue about Athena, but what about the show! Triton helped SAVE Hans Christian Anderson! If he's not considered human, then I don't know what is! Ariel was also heartbroken and confused after Triton destroyed all of her possessions of the human world, so of COURSE she wasn't really thinking when offered the chance to be human. She had flaws, and Ursula knew how to exploit them. Simple as that."
Belle has great values. She is smart, beautiful, considered, etc. Ariel doesnt have that values, and she was little naive in doing treats like that.
Ariel is over loved for qualities that she doesn't have it.
