Mushu can be irritating, but he is seriously "supportive" of Mulan in all the important areas. It's clear Mushu loves Mulan by what he does in the first movie... In the second movie, Mushu grows jealous of Shang getting as close to Mulan as he is himself. It's sort of a "besties" problem that Mushu has, along with his "employment" being threatened by the impending marriage.
