Both of the princes in the story are looking for a mystery girl, and they're both left with only one thing that they would be able to recognize the mystery girl with;

Cinderella - glass slipper
The Little Mermaid - singing voice

In both the stories, the girl the Prince is looking for is the one that the other characters would least expect, the princesses in the story.
They least expect Cinderella because she's a servant, and they think she didn't go to the ball
They least expect Ariel because she's mute.

Overall, the stories are similar because the prince is looking for a mystery girl, and has one little thing to recognize her with, and the mystery girl is the one the other character's least expect

That doesn't make them too similar IMO. Besides, a lot of fairy tales are similar due to plot devices like that.
