i thought the grandma was the mother's mom. it just seemed like it in the sequel and dad and grandma fa don't seem like they are close because mother fa shows more concern and scolds grandmother fa more often.

I used to think that grandma is mom's mom just because most of people I know are closer to their maternal grandmothers that to their paternal ones. But it's Ancient China. The wife's relatives are not a part of family there.
