I find it extremely irritating, and then when I politely ask them to credit me for my work they make a big deal about it, all I asked is that you credit its not like I'm asking you to jump off a building!

Not really. I just don't want them to say they made it. If they credit me it's cool but if they don't it's not the end of the world.

I'm actually flattered when I see people have used my icons. That means they liked them! If they try to claim them as their own work, I'd have an issue but if they just want to use them as their profile icon or on a pick, I love it!

I don't hunt people down when they don't credit my icons. I do hunt them down when they post edited graphics from tumblr/livejournal without credit though.

I like it when people use my icons. That is a big part of sharing them here. But yeah it annoys me if they make no effort to credit me. Like if they use it as a user icon and get some props for it and never once mention that they didn't make it themselves. That sucks. I once found a user whose entire user icon gallery was made up of my icons and she didn't mention me once, not in the gallery or on any of the props she got. I dunno, just seems like if you like them enough to take them and use them, you shouldn't mind respecting the maker enough to at least credit them for their work.

Well if they use them in picks, quizzes, articles or stuff like that, I'm okay with it. But if they use them as user icons and like misanthrope86 said, get some props for it and never once mention that they didn't make it themselves. That really does suck. But I don't blame them if they really don't know who made it. Though I always credit myself when I upload my icons so that this won't happen.
But what I always hate is, when they claim them as theirs.

First of all, its not "your work" if your editing from caps of television & movies you didn't entirely shoot yourself. Unless you wrote to the one of the major studios for permission to use their work exclusively in your art, you have no rights at all if someone else takes one of your edited pieces no matter how much work you poured into it.

Just like fanfiction, you could be this amazing writer who does a far better job with the characters than the show/book/movie writers, but you are still borrowing another person's work, therefor there is no jurisdiction if someone steals from you.

I'm not just one of the bottom feeders that goes around stealing others work, I make my own LJ icons, and distribute them freely without any rules, I also use others in the same manner. I do leave a comment as to what I took and if someone should ask where I got them I always link back to the creator, or credit if I upload a batch, out of common courtesy, and NEVER claim as my own. I do however, completely disagree with the *only use on this website* rule- its mental to even begin to believe you can dictate such a thing.

If we use photos of people that 'common people' can't take photos of and turn it into an icon and leave it as is, then I agree with you - that's not our work, that's simply a photo made by another person.

If we use a photo of a person and alter it somehow, though, I think it IS our work. If we could take photos of the persons we want them of ourselves, we'd do it and then use them.
