Every time David Benioff and D.B. Weiss make a move, they’re not just changing the way Game of Thrones looks, they’re also changing the way the fanbase feels. We’re living in the Golden Age of boxset television, and Thrones could well be the greatest of them all – that brings great pressure to get it right, and one wrong move, could spark a cyber war.

Killing Jon Snow was the most unthinkable option at the end of Season 5, but Benioff and Weiss deserve credit for not shying away from George R.R. Martin’s material – and for giving fans a gut-wrenching ending. Well, more of a ‘pausing’, if you listen to the theories, promotional material, and leaks.

Things are precariously teetering on the brink in Thrones, with just about every major character left in dire circumstances from the Season 5 finale. It will be interesting to see whether the show skips into the future or simply picks up from where it left off.

More complex storylines are piling up with each passing episode, meaning that Benioff and Weiss’ task is growing increasingly difficult without the final edition of source material. They will meander the show away from the book series in sections, but there will be some major aspects that they simply must get right if Game of Thrones is to maintain it’s near-perfect record so far.
