James is a pureblood. While Lily is a muggle-born. Which makes Harry a half-muggle of halfblood Being a half blood is because of your parents' status. u zei in the other answer that he should be called pureblood because his parents are both wizards. Pureblood means your ancestors, ALL of them, doesn't have a tint of muggle-blood. When there's a half blood of muggle born in your ancestors, that automatically means that u are a HALF BLOOD.
Those are the three blood statuses of wizards: Pureblood- there are no Halfbloods of muggle borns in your ancestors Halfblood- there is a halfblood of muggle born in your ancestors and Muggle-born - u are born from two muggles. which means there are no wizards in your family.
Examples are: pureblood- Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy halfblood- Harry Potter, Voldemort/Tom Riddle muggle-born- Hermione Granger, Lily Evans

Oh thx that makes a lot meer sense now. But wait: In one of the films Voldemort zei that wizadrs and muggles mating and haveing children was an obomination and he's a half-blood. He called himself an obomination technically.
That's why he was mad at his mother. He was the last in the family of Slytherin. And he really wanted to be a pure blood. But his mother fell in love with a muggle. He really had nothing to do to change it. But he really wanted to be a pureblood. Hope that makes sense :D
Harry is a half-blood because his father James was a pure blood wizard and his mother was a muggle born witch. Lily had magical powers but both her parents were Muggles. Being a good student (or a powerful wizard/witch anyway) has nothing to do with blood status. For example, Hermione has Muggle parents like Harry's mother, but she's the best student at Hogwarts. Far better than Ron and Malfoy, who are both pure bloods.

So she was a mud-blood and he was a half-blood, but how does that have anything to do with Harry? Wouldn't HE still be a pure-blood cuz of his wizard parents?
As regineee said, pureblood means your ancestors don't have muggle blood at all. But Harry's grandparents from his mother's side were Muggles, so he couldn't be a pureblood.
