 Salina Duplessis
Salina Duplessis
Actress/Filmmaker Salina Duplessis brings her award-winning dark comedy short film “My Name is Karma” to the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles on February 7th.

The film earned ‘Best Comedy Short Film’ when it premiered at the Urban MediaMakers Film Festival and is quickly becoming an audience favorite.

I had a chance to interview Salina to find out meer about her directorial debut, “My Name is Karma”.

Tell us about “My Name Is Karma.”

SALINA: MY NAME IS KARMA follows the young and seemingly successful Robin Clarke, whose only downfall is her deadbeat boyfriend, Garrett (Rashod Freelove). When he stands her up on her birthday, a desperate Robin unknowingly incites the help of Karma personified who magically gives her the power to make sure that Garrett’s ‘Karma’ catches up with him.

This is your first time as a writer, director and ster – what was that like?

SALINA: It was like piloting a plane and being a flight attendant at the same time!! When u act and direct u wear many hats. If I ever act again in a movie that I direct, my role would be very minor, not a lead.

What would u consider your characters ‘best’ quality? And their ‘worst’?

SALINA: My character’s best quality is also her worst… She hopes her relationship will improve (she’s optimistic)….. and She hopes her relationship will improve (she’s dumb & needs to verplaats on) lol

Why did u want to create this film?

SALINA: People often fantasize about revenge, but they rarely act on it. I wanted to explore that theme in this film. Also when people are in poor relationships they’re quick to blame their partner for their unhappiness. I’m really big on individuals taking responsibility for their behavior in relationships when they aren’t going so well.

What’s the biggest lesson u learned from working on this project?

SALINA: I learned that sometimes things will not go as planned. I will be tested. But if I want something bad enough, I can make it happen.

And, now just for fun:

What’s your favoriete food?
SALINA: I’m the ultimate foodie so this is THE MOST difficult vraag for me to answer. But I have to go with a crawfish strudel. It’s served only at the Jazz Fest in New Orleans, my hometown. It’s a puff pastry with creamy crawfish goodness stuffed inside!

Cats of dogs?
SALINA: Dogs - especially rescued ones!

favoriete movie from your childhood.
SALINA: The Black Stallion

Tell us one thing that would surprise our readers to learn about you.
SALINA: I drive a stick shift

How can fans keep up with you?

If u live in the U.K. then you’re probably already familiar with actor Adam Croasdell from his turn on the wildly populair toon “East Enders.” But, if you’re here in the States, like me, then you’re just getting to know this handsome and talented Brit from across the pond.

In theaters now, Adam is starring as real-life Col. Elmer Ellsworth in the newly released historical film “Saving Lincoln.” And, he’s been popping up this jaar as ‘bad guys’ in the populair televisie shows “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Nikita.” He’s also appeared in ABC’s “Body of Proof” and...

The newly released coming-of-age film “October Baby” is certainly causing a stir with its life-affirming message, and I recently had a chance to chat with one of the stars of the film JASON BURKEY.

Jason has been building a solid resume and racking up performance awards on the indie festival circuit, including the Heartland Film Festival’s coveted Jimmy Stewart Memorial Crystal hart-, hart Award and Envision Film Festival’s Best Actor Award for his performance in “Thin Ice”; and Best Actor accolades for his performance in the indie films “Date This” and “Moment of Truth.”

Now I realize that some films deserve the hate. But really isn't it all up to each individual. I honestly don't know why we have critics for anything. They are humans like us and what makes their opinion meer valid and noteworthy than someone elses. But take the " Cars" films for instance, I enjoy them cause I think talking cars and a world full of car stuff is just cute. But it has become a bashing platform. Same with Transformers and Twilight. I personally don't care for Transformers of Twilight, but someone out there does. And yes I have bashed the Twilight movies, but most of the time...

Thanksgiving is gone, Christmas is on the way, and I'm ready for some snow. But, since my area doesn't appear to be getting any anytime soon, I will have to live vicariously through movies. So if anyone needs me, I'll just be over here, wrapped up in a blanket, sipping hot chocolate, and pretending it's as snowy outside as it is on my screen while I marathon this stack of movies.

(I have excluded Christmas movies, 'cause I'd never have been able to narrow it down to 5 then, but pretty much all of those will also fulfill your need for snow.)
