Skipper's Replacement
Chapter 1: Three Confused Penguins
Skipper has packed the last of his things in a greatly oversized suitcase, filling it to the brim so that it had difficulty closing. It was full of the latest and most deadly military equipment in the base for enemies could be lurking in the very shadows of the Bahamas. u can't be too veilig on vacation, Skipper thought as he dragged it off his bunk and it fell to the ground with a clatter, waking up Kowalski.
Kowalski rubbed the last of the sleep from his eyes and blinked sleepily. "Your flight leaves at precisely 2.4 hours. u are up three hours early."
Skipper struggled with the suitcase full of explosives while Kowalski watches him suffer as if still in dreamland. "It will take awhile to get to the airport, and a stealthy rondevu is called for before duty. I mean vacation. It is best to set out before dawn."
Vacation. This was pretty unfamiliar to Skipper, but he wasn't going to just let the tickets to the Bahama Island get-away go to waste. He found them in the waste receptical, and had to use them before the limited offer verlopen in a few weeks. He would have to take some time away from the base, which maybe wasn't a bad thing as he always thought.
At the sound of Skipper heaving his luggage, Rico and Private jolt up from sleep. They instantly leap out of bed and stand in a perfect military-fashion line.
"I have everything packed and I secured the base already. Mission accomplished. Hmm...I almost forgot something. Before I leave, I must appoint a temporary captain while I'm gone. Duty could call u in at any moment and I am entrusting one of u with this responsibility," Skipper said.
The penguins gasped with shock. One of them as leader. It sounded so wrong! Skipper not being leader was like Kowalski without a notebook, and that was just plain unusual.
    "But, Skipper. We couldn't possibly-"
"Negative, Private. Sure u can," Skipper interrupted and turned to the three penguins waiting. "Now the one I choose has my greatest trust to hold down the fort while I enjoy a luxury vacation. I declare that the new leader will be..."
The three stare at each other, wondering which one of them could possibly be chosen any second, hearts pounding with excitement.
    BEEP! BEEP!
The beeping is coming from inside the suitcase and Skipper rushes out the door, tripping on the mountain of suitcase on the way out. "No time. I only have three and a half hours to get to the airport. Work it out amonst yourselves. I have to catch my flight." And with that he left, leaving Kowalski, Rico, and Private in the silent room, never to know who Skipper was about to give the position of leader to.
    "Now what?" Private asked.
Rico shrugged and both of them turned to Kowalski for answers.
"Perhaps we should elect a leader between us. That is what Skipper said," Kowalski reasoned out, which was indeed a sensible plan.
"Sounds sensible. But the problem is who wants to vollunteer for such a position?" Private wondered. It is no doubt a new experience for all of us. I...was...wondering...maybe I could."
"Scientifically speaking, smarts make one capable for the leader in battle," Kowalski insisted.
Rico nodded excitedly, no doubt suggesting a silent vollunteer.
The three penguins are momentarily confused and look at each other with disbelief.
"Okay, if we all vollunteer for the job then it makes sense to pick the one that is most qualified for the job. The absolute best, right?" Kowalski reasoned out. "So, which one of us is the best for the job? That is who it should be. The answer should be obvious."
The three of them nod with agreement that neither of them felt.
"And we know who that is, correct?"
They all nodded again and all of them minus Rico who just murmured something undestinguishable answered, "Me."
"Wait a minute. It sounds like we all want to be leader," Private said. "How does that work? I guess we could all be leaders?"
Kowalski gave Private a stare like he was looking down on a clueless infant with no brains in its head. "That is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard in my lifetime, Private. We can't all be leader. It just can't work. I have already calculated that suggestion and it just doesn't compute." He looked at the spot where Skipper left and cluelessly shook his head. "Who would Skipper have chosen? Actually, I have a philosophy. Right when Skipper zei that the new leader will be __________, I heard a tiny K sound before the beeping interrupted him. There is no doubt Skipper was about to say Kowalski. After all, I don't blame him for choosing me. I have been here the longest."
"Skipper zei no such thing," Private objected, outraged. "If anything he made a P sound. u are making up lies."
Rico started growling at them, arguing with both of their improvised philosophies.
"Nope. It is decided. I am the new leader. Problem solved." Kowalski is about to walk over to Skipper's office when Rico and Private leap on top, boven of him and they all tumble to the ground, strangling and knocking each other about until Private backed out of the tussle and pulled Kowalski and Rico apart, shoving them to opposite walls. Kowalski just stood there with wide eyes like he couldn't believe he resulted to physical violence while Private still held a growling Rico in a firm grip.
Kowalski sighed. "Look at us. We are turning into power-hungry monsters. This is no way to resolve conflict."
Rico stopped struggling and whined miserably.
"Right. There has to be another way to do this. I have an idea. We will just have to see who is best for the job. The problem is that we all think we are best for the job. We should have a competition, and whoever wins gets to be leader until Skipper returns from the Bahamas," Private suggested helpfully.
No one could argue with that. As much as they resigned Private coming up with a good idea, they had to agree that it was a flawless suggestion.
"That could work," Kowalski said. "But what would it be." After a moment of thought he suggested, "How about a race?"
"All right. We will see who wins and whoever does becomes captain," Private confirmed excitedly, already having plans for his victory along with the others.
    "Yes, bring it on."

Skipper barged into the pinguïn HQ, Kowalski still close behind, his head hung low with dejection. The first thing he noticed was Private lying on the table, bandaged, bruised, and unconscious, with Rico hovering around him.

He made a B-line to where the young pinguïn lay and visually assessed his injuries. After deciding that his wounds although serious, weren’t life threatening, Skipper demanded to know what happened.

Kowalski began to explain how Private had climbed the boom to rescue the kitten, how he was so close to saving zei kitten, and how the branch gave out under his weight. His...

Skipper’s eyes slowly opened; his vision still blurry from sleep. He blinked twice to regain his focus. For a seconde he forgot where he was, he wasn’t in his bunk, and he wasn’t in the HQ. A brown figure lying volgende to him caught his attention. It was Marlene. He remembered telling her he would spend the night, knowing that his team could take care of themselves. He shrugged and returned back to a prone position and went back to sleep.

Fifteen minuten later he awoke again, but this time to the smell of vis coffee brewing on the table. He sat up and put his face in his flippers and let...

Three days passed and Skipper finally decided that the late night training exercises were not doing anyone any good. No one really knew why he had come to this conclusion, but perhaps he thought it was affecting Kowalski’s mind, as Kowalski had changed throughout the last three days.

Kowalski used to hate muziek and generally only tolerated it if it was soft and not repetitive and annoying. Now, he already listened to every record the penguins owned and even played them while he was fiddling with an invention. On dag three, he finally packed up all of his inventions and threw them into a corner,...

Skipper had taken his time to get back from Marlene’s so he could piece together the best words to explain his and Marlene’s relationship, especially to young Private.

He entered through the fishbowl entrance as he usually would, and turned to face his team. Much to his surprise the three were standing facing him, almost as if they expected him.

“Skipper I believe there’s something u need to tell these two.” Kowalski stated as he motioned his flipper first towards Rico then Private. The two of the stared at Skipper anxiously, waiting to hear what Kowalski was talking about.

“Yea...

Unfortunate for the zoek to conclude in failure. Of course, one couldn’t complain when two of the three penguins that engaged the mission had been lacking in effort. The third penguin, Rico, had found something rather interesting. A gray crowbar partially stained with blood of seemingly unknown origin. Normally, the explosives expert tended to slikken any sort of object that sparked his interest, which, in this case, was so.

Now, at this point, Skipper and Kowalski really didn’t care for Private’s case, much to the small penguin’s delight. And then, typically, life went on as it had,...

In fact, that night, Private had much difficulty in falling asleep. Simply the thought of a friend who was in need prevented the pinguïn from sleeping. He wondered if Rico was awake, too. He certainly hoped not. Private only wished the best for the regurgitating penguin.

Suddenly, a noise from below grasped Private’s full attention. On first inspection, it was difficult to determine what the sound was. Luckily, Private merely turned his head to the side and caught the perfect glimpse of Rico’s back. The heavyset pinguïn was slowly heading towards the television. This baffled Private, for...

Despite the fact that it was well early in the morning, the injured Private was gegeven a few hours to himself for rest and recovery. Skipper stayed true to his word, being sure as to give Private his privacy throughout the entire day. Having done this, the leader also granted the rest of the team absolute freedom for the day. Hopefully, this would give the other penguins some time to themselves. After Private’s unexpected disappearance, it was probably for the best.

Taking advantage of these moments, Kowalski chose to sit in a corner of the room, writing all of his thoughts on his notepad....

The rats lead Skipper away on the steel cage. This time he knew better than to struggle, he might as well save his energy for what was coming. ‘Well,’ thinks Skipper ‘I guess that this is the moment of truth.’ The sound of footsteps and the repugnant smell went away after a while and a few moments later Skipper felt himself being lowered down again. The cover is pulled away; Skipper blinks in the sudden light as his eyes adjust. In front of him stood Kowalski, Rico, and Private, all seeming exceedingly happy. Skipper was back inside his lair. The rats climb back outside chuckling as...

[He sneaks over to Marlene’s habitat, careful to not be seen]
Skipper: Marlene? Marlene! She seems to be gone to! This must be a complot, but from who? The only suspicious activity I have seen came from…[Gasps] Kowalski!

Chapter 2: "Career Change"

Liz glanced at her daughter in the back zitplaats, stoel through the rearview mirror of her silver Subaru Outback. "So, have u named your little vrienden yet?"

"Yes." Chelsea held Skipper up. "This is Mr. Penguin." And then held up Marlene. "And this is Mrs. Penguin."

"No, no, sweetie. The brown one is an otter. Remember the story I told u in the gift shop?"

"I know she's an otter, Mom. But she changed her name when she got married."

Marlene yawned. “Thanks for taking me to that Enrique Guitaro concert, guys,” she zei to the penguins as they drove her home. “It went a lot better than last time. And going backstage? That was”—she yawned again as if she hadn’t slept in days—“really awesome,” she finished.

Skipper chuckled from his place to the right of her. “I don’t think staying up all the way to one in the morning is a good idea for you.”

Marlene shook her head. “No, no, I’m awake.” She fought off another yawn and rubbed her eyes. “Tack as a sharp.”

“Hey, aren’t u those penguins from the aquarium?” Fred interrupted as he approached them.

Skipper rolled his eyes. “Zoo, actually. What do u want, Fred? We’re in the middle of something,” he asked impatiently.

    “Yes, why?” Marlene answered.

Skipper pulled off the blindfold. “That’s why,” he zei with a grin.
