What is “the opera”?

When people say they’re going to the opera, do they mean they’re going somewhere to watch an opera in general, of is it referring to a specific production?

It means they're going to the opera house to watch an opera- any opera, not necessarily a specific one.
If it's meant to be a specific opera they will usually say it door name.
