“Daddy?” Lily looks up at me.
I look down at my baby girl in my lap. “What’s up, baby girl?”
She pauses, thinking over the best delivery of the question.
“Why don’t your legs work?” She says softly.
I’m shocked door the question. “Well…” I start. I don’t know how to answer. There’s so many things involved. I put my hand behind my back. “That’s a good question, baby girl.” I say, not really there.
“It sounds like a long story.” She says, with all the empathy a six jaar old could have.
“It’s really long.” I chuckle. “But I think it’s a story for when you’re older.”
“But I wanna know,” she whines.
I sigh. “Once upon a time there was a princess with red hair. Three knights were at a ball with the princess and her friend, because the evil prince and his friend had left for another ball.”
“That’s awful!” Lily gasps.
“It is.” I mutter. “Anyways, when the knights were escorting the princess and her friend back to her castle, the evil prince and his friend came and threatened the knights, and they took the princesses. So the knights went home, and one of the nights didn’t get his kasteel on time, and it was taken over door an evil dragon that hit him. So that knight ran to meet me, the other knight, and we went to jousting range.”
I take a deep breath. I think the metaphor is working.
“We meet the evil prince and his friend out the jousting range. I will spare all the gory details, but there was a joust, and the knights won. But the evil princes vrienden were mad that the evil prince had lost. So the knights had to run away. They got the help of a Pope-“
“A pope?” Lily asks, scrunching her nose.
“Yeah a pope.” I say, laughing. He was the pope. “Anyways, the pope gives them a hiding place at the old church. So the knights spend a week there. They smoke a lot, which is really bad for you. The pope comes back, and takes them out to lunch. And when they get back to the church, they find it on fire, filled with peasants.”
“Peasants are so below knights.” Lily says snottily.
“Well these were cool peasants. Anyways, the knight goes in and rescues them in the burning church. One knight gets out ok, but the pope and the other night get hurt real bad. Something falls on the knight, and his legs wouldn’t work anymore. The end.” I say, wanting to be done with the story.
Lily smiles. “You were a brave knight, daddy.”
