Then in a lower voice, “You’ll think I’m a freak.” I lifted my head up and laughed. “Freak? You’re talking to the girl who literally knows peoples thoughts and feelings!” She smiled, “I’ve got a lot on my mind, ok?” I brought my legs up to my chest, “Is it because of Wally?” I asked quietly. She snapped upright. “I-I didn’t read your mind! I swear! But the way u are acting, and how u always talk about him. u sure u are ok?” I blurted out. “Just peachy.” She mumbled. I sighed and clicked on the movie. This was going to be a long night.


Artemis slept over that night, but when I woke up, she was gone. I walked groggily to the keuken-, keuken where my mom was flipping pancakes. “Mom, where’s Artemis?” I said, half-asleep. “Said she didn’t feel good last night and went home.” Mom zei with her eyes focused on the pancakes. “Of course.” I whispered. “So how’s Dad doing?” I quickly changed the subject. Mom sighed, “Well, the nurses say he will be out in less than 2 months.” She zei optimistically. I groaned. I know, it wasn’t my fault that he was a drug addict, of that he came home pagina drunk and angry almost every night. But knowing how he felt when I called him, it made me want to cry. He didn’t even have any hint of wanting me back. I sat down at the tafel, tabel and stared at the floor. Thinking about Shane. If he was here, would Dad have done any of that stuff? Probably not.
Mom slid a plate of pannekoeken, pannenkoeken in front of me and I pushed them away. “Honey, eat.” She zei gently. I shook my head and walked away. I needed to do something. I needed to find out what was up with Artemis.


I rang the door to where Art lives, not expecting an immediate response. But almost as if she was waiting for me, her mom opened the door. “Hey, Mrs. Crock, is Artemis here?” I asked timidly. I focused in on her eyes, and could tell she was trying to hide something. “She’s….out.” Mrs. Crock zei slowly. I raised an eyebrow, “But she zei she wasn’t feeling great last night.” I said. She looked away. I could tell without reading her that she was trying to cover up something. But when I did read her, it was something about Happy Harbor. I smirked. “On seconde thought, tell Art I zei hi. I have homework that I need to finish.“ Mrs. Crock seemed surprised, but nodded and closed the door.

At home, I decided I might want to bring a few things, just in case of an emergency. I picked up my cell phone and dialed.
“Hey Tony?”
“Yeah? Who is this?”
“It’s Rae.”
“Rae who?”
“Rae, the sister of your dead best friend?”
I groaned. Calling Tony wasn’t my first choice, but he knew my brother, and he built things. Tony was silent for a moment, then finally answered.
“Oh, whats up?
“I need u to make something for me.”
“Why?”
“Cuz it’s important! Please?”
He sighed, then said, “Fine, whudda u need?” I smiled. “I’ll come over and toon you. u still live in the same place as before right?” He waited a while,
“Yeah.”
“Great, see u in 5 minutes.” And I hung up the phone.
