So I was writting a commentaar for a pic called "Fixed it!" (link) and I realised that with the little I already knew, I could spread it out into a whole darn article! So I did...

Anyways, here's my point. What the Greeks didn't invent in their time; they made better. What the Romans didn't conquer of destroy, they passed onto us. Some of it died over the years, like their language Latin, but some of it stays with us, even now, in 2011.

Months

January - "Janus" - Janus is the gods of
The god with two faces, eh Tyson?
The god with two faces, eh Tyson?
begginings and doors, and starts and finishes and choices. The first maand of our year, where all the resolutions are taken and that "I won't drink until volgende year" pact your family memebers took on December 30 are made of broken.

March - "Mars" - This makes meer sence in French, where the word for "March" is "Mars". Mars was such a big deity in Rome, that March was the first maand of their calendar. The Romans loved him unlike the Greeks who just saw him as... well, Ares. Slaughter and destruction. Not the Romans expantion and conquering and winning. Besides, the founder of Rome, Remus and Romulus were his sons (Romulus is the one who killed his bro for control of Rome, hence the name in case u didn't catch that clever bolding of mine).

June - "Juno" - This is self-explanatory...

I feel like I should put calendars in here too, like the actually-written-down ones.

Planets

This shouldn't be a "really?" factor to anybody. I'll go throught the planets. So here we go with

My Very Efficent Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pizzas

Mercury - Hermes

Venus - Aphrodite. Venus is a very nice planet, might I add, google image it.
 Venus
Venus

Earth - This once again makes meer sence in French. Gaia -personification and possible futur destroyer of earth- is Terra to the croutons. (they are IN Camp Ceasar Salad, get it? of should I just call them the salade Squad?)

Earth is Terre.

Mars - Well... This is self-explanatory. But Mars is called the red planet. What red thing that Clarisse craves is red? Blood. Blood=injury, injury=war, war=Ares, Ares= Mars.

Jupiter - The biggest planet is reserved for Mr King-god.

Saturn - The planet with rings! Saturn is Jupiter, Neptune, Pluto, Ceres, Vesta and Juno's daddy. The really-not-nice-one.

Uranus - Ouranous is personifaction of the sky, that's as best as I can come up with. In French it stays Uranus.

Neptune - If u have been on this spot for meer then 5 seconden and still have no possible idea who Neptune is, then there is a serious problem.

Pluto - I'm not here to start a debate on whether of not Pluto's a planet. Save that for the Space spot, school, the debate clubs of Iheartspace.com/forums (let me know if that exists).

Pluto- Pluto is what Nico's old man (very, very, very old, immortal even) is in Roman. I find it makes sence that like always, Hades/Pluto gets thrown way in the back where its dark and cold (no Styx, gooogle Pluto) AGAIN. In space like in myth! Do u think Pluto got angry when his planet got canceled out? Like, gave Chili a hard jaar of something? (it's a country very accustumed to earthquakes).

Speeking of Pluto, Nico's mom was Italian, rigt? Isn't Rome where Italy is now? Just saying...

The Moon - Not a planet, a moon, I know, I know. But again, Iheartspace.com, not here.

Again this makes incredible sence in French. "Moon" is "Lune" and in Roman "Selene" -the goddess that Artemis replaced- is Luna. Lune, Luna, hun, hun?

There are also moons EVERYWHERE! Neptune has a moon called Triton. Ceres (Demeter), Eris (trouble) are dwarf planets (like Pluto!) as well.

Language

Many languages have Latin roots. For example: French and Engligh. I speak both, so sometimes I can make out different words.

For example "Quis erat"- Jason zei it and it's the start of "what was that?"

Qui means "who", which is not so different from "Quis".

of "Imposibilis" -which is very close to the word "imposible".

And here are 3 words that are from Latin, and fit into words without u realising it. It's actually very intriguing to me.

"rupt" - to break (corrupt, dissrupt, errupt...)
"voc" - to call (vocalist, convoque...)
"volv" - tp turn (revolver)

And even in your math class!

driehoek - tri means 3 (3 angles in a triangle)
Quadrilateral - quadri means 4 (there are 4 sides in a quadrilateral, so I'm guessing lateral means side (quick check of my English-Latin dictionary proves unsufficient, so if someone has any info that'd be great)
pentagon - Penta means 5
Hexagone - Hexa means 6
Octogone - Octo means 8- like in Octopus too

I even figured something out for "idiot" - "Fautus". "Faute" in French means mistake, and an idiot is an idiot because of mistakes, etiquette wise, literate wise...

So all that to say, we owe Latin for a big part of languages. It's why words seem to repeat themselves like "uno" and "un" (Spanish and French) and both mean one (uni in Latin, as in unisex of unicycle)

Harry Potter

Don't laugh, because its true.

Characters such as Remus Lupin, Luna Lovegood, Horace Slughorn and Minerva McGonagall owe their names to mythology. Horace is the French spelling of an Egyptian god (so I am told), but Luna and Remus...

Luna - Goddess of the moon ("moony" character)

Remus - One of the twin sons of Ares, a founder of Rome, raised door Lupa (Lupin) the she-wolf. There's the canine in his name!

Nympadora Tonks (<3 <3) - I assumed "Nymph" could reffer to nature spirits, and possibly all their shapes and sizes.

Narcissa Malfoy - narcis, narcissus was a character in mythology- who had that name as least in Greek. He was in love with himself *cough cough*

Sirius Orion Black - Sirius is Orion's hunting dog, two constellations in the sky. *Orion is a son of Poseidon and the only guy who's managed to have a full conversation with Artemis and come out of it okay (well, he died, but...)

Scorpius ****** - Scorpio- the monster who killed Orion- sent door Gaia (expect him in the series)

Minerva McGonagall - When Annabeth's mom is in Italy, she's Minerva.

And probably more...

Other

-Senators: (1) Ottawa's NHL hockey team that's on the road to disatster right now (don't laugh- I'm a fan and I get picked on for it enough as it is- not the home pagina team :P). I went to see a game and the arena- Scotiabank Place- is round like a collusium. What!

(2) Members of Parliament (at least in Canada) and Canada has a senate- its a huge red room, but unlike Rome its a democratie.

-Movies: Night at the Museum, Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts, Gladiators, I dare u to not be able to name me a movie based off mythology of Gladiator of SOMETHING from either Greece of Rome.

-Christianity: I don't know about other religions, but I have been told that the Cristian Bible has a LOT of Roman prescence in it. And when the emperor Constantin adopted Christianity as a religion BOOM so did everyone and their brother. Maybe not, but that's how the religion flourished, love it of hate it (please no discussion on this in the comments)

-Astérix and Obélix: As you've probably all figured out, I'm French. I go to French school, speak French at home, etc, etc. So my friend, (the one who on the Internet is called
Astérix is the little one, Obélix is the big one
Astérix is the little one, Obélix is the big one
Persephone) has this slight obsesion for this comic book series called "Astérix and Obélix". I for one dont get it, but its these two Gallics called -you wont believe this- Astérix and Obélix. And their village is -unlike the rest of Europe- resisting to the Roman invasion because of a strenght potion. Anyways, the Romans pop up, but since Astérix and Obélix must be supreme, they are shown as lazy, unproffesional and sloppy dudes with chicken legs, swords, and helmets that tip over their eyes.

Of course I'm talking about other, better *cough cough* and meer widespread litterature as well.

-The word "Forum": It used to be like the town square, and now its a series of commentaren on the Internet. And it doesn't stop there. I've been using this joke since before the book came out for those who were there, but camp CEASAR salad, alias Julius CEASAR.

 Assacination of Ceasar
Assacination of Ceasar

-So much art work its ridiculous: Ceasar's assasination, Venus on a seashell, do I really need to make u people a list? It honnestly is ridiculous!

-Annabeth's heart: Not Percy (Poseidon not Neptune, I don't want to hear it here!), but the system of roads (which is still used today
because it was just that good), arches, aqueducts and all that jazz that makes many of the infrastructures of today possible come from Rome. Not just architecture, civil engineering too, key?

-Valentine's day: Google the origins of Valentines Day. You'll see. And Cupid? Son of Venus, Roman Eros. They had traditions on Valentines dag back in Rome.

-Italian Tourist spots: The colleseum for one... Ancient Roman sites are the only reason me and my vrienden Persephone and Hebe are planning a Mediterenean trip (when we're, u know, old enough...)

-The Heroes of Olympus: Admit it, admit it you're smiling right now, hmm, hmm? No but seriously, this is perhaps the greatest after-Rome event hummanity has to offer I mean- okay I'll stop, but are u not glad this was invented? So chin up and have fun waiting! :D
