Is Butch Cavendish dead?

There are two reasons that I ask. One is that we never saw his body after the train car crashed. The seconde is that in the original script he WAS a wendigo, that is, a werewolf, and that's why John was supposed to kill him with a silver bullet. Of course, John never shot Butch in the movie.
